1419.0. "Ring Inits Received counter??" by EEMELI::SOHLMAN (Jouko Sohlman , NIS Helsinki Finland) Tue Sep 13 1994 13:33

    	Hello !

What actully is happening in the FDDI-ring when our DECbridge900
FDDI interface counter, ring inits received, increments?
    	All other counters remain zero.

    		Thanks in advance

This is the number of times that the ring experienced a claim, which
    it did not initiate.

    	Thanks !

So, what is wrong with our FDDI-ring? We have 1 DECbridge900 and
2 Silicon Graphics work stations on it.

1419.3What rev of firmware does bridge have...NACAD2::BATTERSBYThu Sep 15 1994 14:534
Can you determine what rev of operational firmware the DECbridge
900MX has using the bridge console menu 3?

1419.4I am pretty sure that it is 1.2.1EEMELI::SOHLMANJouko Sohlman , NIS Helsinki FinlandThu Sep 15 1994 15:138
	Hello !

I am pretty sure that it is 1.2.1 (no upgardes done after

It may be helpful to understand what else comprises the ring that
the DECbridge 900MX is attached to. Could you provide a simplified
diagram of what the ring configuration looks like. When you say the
Silicon Graphics workstations are "on it", are you saying they are
on the bridge (Ethernet port), or on the FDDI ring along with the
bridge. Also you may want to upgrade the bridge to the latest firmware
of rev 1.4. Then observe if you still have problems with the ring.
That older rev of bridge firmware did have some problems related to
fragmentation, but that bug caused the bridge to actually crash.
That isn't what you appear to be describing.
BTW: there is a very good section that describes the ring initialization
process if you are interested in understanding it better. It is in
chapter 7 of the FDDI Primer order no. EC-H0750-42 LKG

What does wrong mean in this case?

It is not wrong for there to be ring inits. It is wrong for there
to be LOTS of them. Can you characterize them as to the rate (#/second)
and also who is initiating them (if you have an analyzer and can see
this. Also, are there any beacons being seen?

1419.7No FDDI-analyzer.EEMELI::SOHLMANJouko Sohlman , NIS Helsinki FinlandTue Sep 20 1994 08:458
    	Hello !
We don't have any FDDI-analyzer so I can't say anything more than
the HUBwatch is telling to us.
The rate of the inits is around 20-50/2-3mins and the customer also
said that he could also notice delays from time to time on the
    	traffic throug the ring.
