1409.0. "New SMF PMD ready??" by ZPOVC::RAMARAJ () Mon Sep 12 1994 15:11

    Is the new SMF PMD for DECconcentrator 900 ready yet?
    To allow A and B SMF PMDs in the conc and also to allow
    all 6 ports to be SMF PMD types.

1409.1No new SM MODPMDs yet!LEVERS::IANNARONEWed Sep 14 1994 16:4111
    Raj,
    	Unfortunately our vendor for the fiber optics receiver decided to
    stop manufacture of the receiver with NO WARNING! As a
    result, we've been forced to stop the engineering testing we had
    started, and to purchase and test a new receiver from a different vendor.
    The new receiver has slightly different specs and will require thorough
    testing in the new SM card. This basically means the new SM card will
    probably not be available for another couple of months.

    Regards,
    John Iannarone
1409.2That's Incredible!!!JAHMAN::ELLISPeter S. Ellis Jr. - MBAd (More & Better Ads!)Thu Sep 15 1994 02:159
    Let me get this straight: Digital relied on a vendor to produce a
    product component WITHOUT securing some minimum order commitment from
    the vendor? How did we find ourselves in this position after publishing
    (AND SELLING) the capabilities of the concentrator?

    I now have a customer ready to order (on exception to their Synoptics
    standard) but no product. I'm all ears for suggestions, here folks!

1409.3Port 1/6 SMFs in DC900mx,possible?ZPOVC::RAMARAJThu Sep 15 1994 03:119
    John,

    Is it still possible to use the current SMF PMDS for A/B(port 1 and 6)
    connections in DC900MX.

    I know this will only leave port 3 and 4 left as M ports.

1409.4Single mode MODPMD blues...LEVERS::IANNARONEThu Sep 15 1994 17:2327
    Raj,
    	Yes, the current single mode module CAN be put into ports 1 and 6
    to provide SM connections to the A and B ports provided ports 2 and 5
    are left open to provide a place to put the coiled up fiber pigtails,
    as you have correctly alluded to by stating that only ports 3 and 4 are
    left to use as M ports.

    RE -2:
    	The receiver we originally planned to use has been used by DEC for
    a few years in several other programs, so needless to say, the fact that
    the part is not going to be manufactured any longer affects alot more than
    just our single mode modpmd. I believe that we have enough parts
    in-house to support the existing products for awhile, but all new
    designs will start out with new part we're bringing in and existing
    designs will phase over to it as needed.

    	In the meantime you may still be able to use the current single mode
    modpmd provided you don't need to put more than 2 in any one
    DECconcentrator 900 and you can leave a port adjacent to the single
    mode port unoccupied in order to accomodate placement of the fiber
    optic pigtails. If you can wait a couple of months, the new SM modpmd
    will NOT have these limitations and will be much easier to install
    since there won't be any fiber optic pigtails to worry about...

    Regards,
    John

    Please contact the product manager, Dennis (SCHOOL::) Majikas.

    But I will say that it is coming. We have to work some phase-in
    plan issues.

O.K . now I wrote to Dennis, too. But maybe it would be more easy to write the
answer here, instead everybody has to write to Dennis! We are able to search
for answers in the notes, when they are here. And it would help the
productmanagers and save them from lot of work answering easy questions.

Thanks for the future
