1406.0. "AUI port problem on DECrepeater 900GM" by COMBAT::JONSSON (Lars Jonsson) Mon Sep 12 1994 14:30

Hi,

A customer reported a problem with getting the AUI port operational on the
DECrepeater 900GM. The AUI power LED did not come ON, neither did the power LED
on a UTP transceiver if you connected one to the repeater AUI port. The module
was replaced by Digital service, but the new module shows the same symptoms.

According to the customer, Hubwatch V3.13 for windows shows the port OK. It's
enabled, not partitioned. The module is connected to the thinwire-channel and a
flex-channel on the backplane side.

Are there any special operations that we have to perform to get the AUI port
going ?

Lars

No, it should power up when you plug in the adapter (transceiver) if the port
is truly switched on. Is it possible the adapter is blown? Can you verify the
adapter on another AUI port somewhere?

Can they diddle around with it? E.g., cycle the port on and off (from
Hubwatch.) If so, does that help?

Do they have a known good GM you can swap in?

1406.2MAM FW Rev?NACAD2::HERTZBERGHistory: Love it or Leave it!Tue Sep 13 1994 19:395
I believe this could also be an issue of MAM firmware not at
sufficiently high revision level. Can you check out what rev they are
    running?

It is possible that a bad MAU could cause the AUI power LED to remain
off. To test this, simply remove the MAU.

>> The MAM module does not report any power supply problem or missing 12
>> volts.

What firmware revision is the MAM at? How about the 900GM?

How many amps of 15V power is the MAM reporting available? It's possible
that the 15V supply in the hub doesn't have enough current capacity to
support the AUI port on the 900GM. When the 900GM is put in the hub, it
asks for permission to use an additional 1/2 amp of 15V. It doesn't turn
on the power until it gets permission from the MAM.

This suggests that this could also be a communications problem between the
MAM and the 900GM. Is the 900GM correctly being identified in the MAM
display? Or does the display say "occupied unknown" or something like that?

FYI - The AUI port power on the 900GM is derrived from the hub's 15V power
supply... not taken from the 12V supply available at each slot. The hub
manager only knows about the 15V supply anyway.

>> Shouldn't the I/O LED come on straight-away.

Yes. As soon as the MAM gives permission. The module asks for permission
right away.

We had the same problem with MAM F/W 2.x. Upgrading the MAM to 3.1
    fixed the problem.
