1393.0. "Configuring FDDI on DEChub900MS: rather autoconfusing..." by BIS6::VANLOOCK (Patrick Van Loock (856-7720)) Thu Sep 08 1994 14:38

As I crashed on note 1311.9 & 1311.10, I would like to resume here...

What about this simple configuration:

         .-------------------------------------------.
         |                                           |
         |                                           |
         |                                           |
         |                                           |
         M M M M M M                                 |
         1 2 3 4 5 6                                 S
         | | | | | |                                 |
       +-+-+-+-+-+-+-+    +-------------+        +---+---------+
       | Concen 900MX|    | Bridge 900MX|        |  DECnis 600 |
       +-+---------+-+    +-+---------+-+        +-------------+
         A         B--------A         B
         |                            |
         +----------------------------+
      |----------- DEChub900 ------------|

      If I understand Luc Pariseau's reply in 1311.10: this config is ok??
      but...

      ==> yes, I understand that Trunks are supported in V3.* but
          ONLY Trunk AB's to the backplane (NO front A or B's
          as in 1311.7 & 1311.9), is that ok?

      ==> what does Karl Pieper mean with a "dual ring completely
          contained in the DEChub 900 backplane being supported
          as of DEChub 900 Firmware V4.0 (not in V3.*)"
          (middle of page 5 of note 651: I understand this as
           diagram 10 is not yet supported...ok???)

      ==> anyway, one of our customers couldn't get this configured:
          on dragging A & B ports to FDDI channels: HUBwatch got
          completely blocked...
          we thought this was because it was a not yet supported config...
          ==> additional info:
                     firmware: DECconcentrator 900MX: V2.0.0
                               DECbridge 900MX      : V1.2.1
                               DEChub 900MS         : V3.0.0
          ==> will the new Sep-releases help??

One additional question:
    Still confused about flexible channels for FDDI:
    ==> is one flexible channel equivalent for 2 fibers (1x transmit and
        1x receive)?? ==> so 2 flexible channels are used for above config??
        (on containing CONC port A and BRIDGE port B;
         the other CONC port B and BRIDGE port A)
    ==> how many FDDI links can be set up on the DEChub900MS??
        we could create 15 FDDI channels on an empty hub but had no
        FDDI modules available to test...
        (note 381.2 states that only 7 point-to-point FDDI connections
         are possible so only 7 FDDI channels supported????)
    ==> is there besides note 651 more / other (supported) configuration
        info available??

Thanks in advance,

Patrick

	AB to the front IS supported
	AB to the back IS supported
	A to the front with B to the back IS supported
	B to the front with A to the back IS supported

	Dual ring contained to the back IS supported.

	1 flex channel = 1 "fiber"
	    so you need 2 channels per connection

	You can have up to 14 channels = 7 FDDI connections.
	So you can have a Trunk_B (B to the back) + 6 Trunk_ABs
	+ a Trunk_A (A to the back).

1393.2still some links missing...BACHUS::VANLOOCKFri Sep 09 1994 08:325
    Thanks again Luc,

    But... any idea why 'our' customer can't get this configured?

1393.3not working...NACAD2::PARISEAULuc PariseauFri Sep 09 1994 13:297
	If the customer set the modules to A & B on the back and
	there are enough flex channels (is there anything else in
	the HUB?) then I don't see what is wrong. It looks like
	you have the lastest code for everything...
