1275.0. "Hub900 Product Lead Times" by BOSJHL::CHIUVE () Thu Aug 04 1994 14:56

Why are the lead times for the DEChub900 product line out so long? I
just checked with DECdirect and got the following lead times:

    		DECbridge900MX 45 days
    		DECrepeater900TM 40 days
    		DECserver900TM 25 days
    		DECrepeater90T+ (DETMI) 120 days

There are also very long lead times for the 900FP and the FDDI
concentrator module. We are going to lose a tremendous amount of
business if we can't improve these lead times. Most customers have
immediate needs and are unwilling to wait this long. If we are selling
to the customer direct we can sometimes manage the process, but if we
are selling through a reseller they will typically substitute another
vendors product if it is cost competitive and available.

The DEChub900 is a well designed cost competitive product line. Kudos
to the development team. However, if we want to be a leading player in
the hub market must put more resources into manufacturing the current
product line and into developing new products for the hub. Just my two
    cents worth.

Unfortunately, I personally don't know the answer your questions
regarding product lead times. However, I would like to clarify that the
DETMI is actually the DECrepeater 90TS.

    Rich,

we had a need for 5 day delivery of DETMM-MA's to a customer in order to
displace Synoptics. We searched our distributor list and eventually came up
with some from Anixter in Chicago.

We had to buy them back from the distributor at a relatively highprice
(compared to buying from Digital) so NIS's margins suffered a bit, but
Digital won overall since we got the big margins when we sold them to
the distributor originally PLUS we are now well on our way to
displacing Synoptics at this large customer site!
