1186.0. "how is 900 config saved?" by KERNEL::REYNOLDSJ () Wed Jul 06 1994 08:56

    Hi,

    		I'm looking for some details on the hub900 configuration:

    A customer is concerned that having assigned a DECrepeater900 to
    his chosen backplane channels through Hubwatch, he loses this config
    when the module is removed from the hub and then replaced.

    I find that the config is saved if the whole hub is powerd down
    and back up and so is safe from power outages. So where is the config
    saved? I guess its stored in the MAM and only rewritten to the modules
    at certain times such as when the MAM powers up?
    Can anyone give me the low-down?

    thanks,

1186.1MAM remembers config, modules don't remember....NACAD2::BATTERSBYWed Jul 06 1994 13:0113
    The modules don't know anything about which slot it's plugged
    into a HUB. The MAM saves configs and what module was plugged
    into a particular location. That's why the config is restored
    when a HUB is powered off and then on again. when a module is
    removed from the HUB, the MAM will disconnect what it was
    connecved to and the operator will have to re-configure this
    module if it is re-inserted in the same slot or another slot
    in the same HUB.
    There have been other notes in here explaining this process and
    the why of this feature.

    Backplane configuration info is stored _only_ in the nvram of the MAM.

    The module will be configured by the MAM whenever it needs it,
    including:

    	o When the configuration is first set up

    	o When the hub powers up

    	o When the module resets (for any reason, including console, remote
    	  hubwatch reset, or bugcheck)

    The MAM constantly polls the backplane status of all modules capable of
    LAN hopping and will update it whenever it is needed.

    The MAM can physically detect when a module is disconnected (the
    locking latch is lifted), and it deletes the backplane configuration
    for the slot when it sees that happen. Note that it cannot detect this
    if it is itself not powered up, so swapping a module for an identical
    one when the hub is powered down will not change the backplane
    configuration.
