1170.0. "Levels of RMON?" by SWAM1::SACHARSKE_LO () Tue Jun 28 1994 16:59

In a sales meeting discussing Hubwatch, a customer asked me what level
of RMON is covered. He said Cabletron covered up to level 4 and he was
interested in coverage up to level 9. I'm looking for an explanation of
    the above.

I have no idea what "level of RMON" refers to. I've searched the RFC (1271),
the draft RFC for the next version of RMON, and the RMON working group's
mail archives and have found no mention of "level of RMON" in this context.

Perhaps your customer's statement about "up to level 9" is a clue? There
are (coincidentally?) nine rmon groups. These are:

                  - statistics
                  - history
                  - alarm
                  - host
                  - hostTopN
                  - matrix
                  - filter
                  - packet capture
                  - event

At any rate, HUBwatch doesn't support RMON at all. We have tentative,
unscheduled plans to add support for RMOM Alarms and Event.

Your customer might be interested in PROBEwatch though. PROBEwatch is
RMON software which works in conjunction with the DECprobe - a MIN-sized
module. Contact Jack Forrest for more information about PROBEwatch
(NAC::FORREST).

PROBEwatch for Windows (QB-218AA-SA $2990) is now shipping from SSB. This
means your customer can now monitor LAN traffic, diagnose problems, and
optimize performance from the same 386 PC that they are using to run HUBwatch
and/or ManageWORKS. Quick start instructions can be found in the README file
on the software and also in NAC::NIPG:[MANAGE.RMON.WINDOWS]QUIKSTRT.TXT. This
file not only tells you how to install PROBEwatch for Windows but also how to
use most of the functions.

NOTE: PROBEwatch needs a DECpacketprobe to gather statistics on a given LAN.
This probe, which is the industry's smallest, can fit into any DEChub or run
stand alone. (DERMN-MA; hub-model $2855, $2990 stand alone)

PLANS: In August we will come out with token ring RMON capability.

Cabletron uses EMME modules (hub management modules) for their RMON
monitoring probe/agent. There must be accompanying software (spectrum
or other) to interagate and display the information from the probe.
The problem with the Cabletron solution last time I looked was that the
probe supported all nine groups but the software did not. Hence I
think the reason for your customers question. Also since their RMON
solution is EMME based they have no standalone solution as we do with
the packet probe ( either standalone or in the hub with the same
    module).
