1098.0. "DEChub ONE port SLOW on DELNI" by CGOOA::KASPER (Amiga + Homebrew = Happiness) Thu Jun 09 1994 20:01

    I have installed a pair of DECbridge 900MX on a customer site. This site
    currently has Chipcom ORnet Stars, servicing 14 buildings. I have
    designed the new network to utilize the existing Ornet Stars. The
    network is "controlling" a chemical palnt, so we are slowly moving
    buildings from the ORnet Stars and onto the 900MX "Switch".

    Murphy was present at the installation, and caused me some headaches.
    The customer has expanded the network over the last two years since the
    original installation and has now untilized cascasde DELNI's in the
    main CPU room in Biulding 1. This building is currently attached to
    the campus fibre network via a LANbridge 150/FOMAU on one of the three
    DELNI's in the room.

    We are slowly adding buildings to the 900MX Switch. To demonstrate
    that FDDI works, we moved a low volume traffic/wharehouse (Building 9
    which is the centre of the hub with the ORnet Stars) onto the 900MX
    and added the second 900MX in building 1 CPU room. I attached it to
    one of the DELNI's via the back door port on the DEChub ONE. Well a PC
    that took 22 secs to boot and load windows across the network now takes
    3 Minutes 45 Secs. The customer was not impressed. Many hours of
    troubleshooting and configuraing, I found that "only" when it was
    attched via the DEChub ONE AUI port, (can't remeber if I tried Port 2 or
    Port 7) did the slow response occur. The customer wants me to explain
    why it fails through the DEChub ONE port. So any volunteers....

    I can fax diagrams of configuration if anyone would like to see the
    configuration.

    Regards,
    Dave DTN 635-4320

    Hi,
    	Please Fax the configuration to me and we'll look into this.

1098.2Is the DEChub One AUI port active?LEVERS::CARRAFIELLOFri Jun 10 1994 14:5518
    re .0

    Dave,
    	Are you sure that the DECbridge has been configured to use the
    DEChub One's AUI port? The DECbridge powers up with all ports
    configured to the front panel. In order to use the AUI port on the
    DEChub One you must redirect Port 4 of the bridge from the front panel
    to the DEChub One AUI port.This has to be done manually through the
    console port by attaching a terminal to the back of the DEChub One.

    	If this hasn't been done it might be possible that your load is
    taking some other longer path through the network via one of the other
    front panel port connections on the DECbridge.

    Thanks,
    	Mike

1098.3Yellow LED = Back doorCGOOA::KASPERAmiga + Homebrew = HappinessFri Jun 10 1994 20:177
    Yes I sent it through the back door...Yellow LED and all. 13, 1, Yes,
    <CR>, 2, 3 are the commands. I know them by heart, having done them
    more that 20 times....

    RE: .1 I shall put the config drawings on the FAX..

1098.4This MIGHT be a heartbeat issue!AKRON1::SMITHSic Semper Potatum Reclinus| Jeff @DTN 431-2712Mon Jul 11 1994 22:0839

    RE: .0

    Hmmmm.... If I'm not mistaken, I've just seen this same problem
    today...

    The senario even sounds familiar.... in my case the customer removed a
    3rd party "hub-like" device that they had two DELNIs connected to,
    then connected the DB900 Onehub AUI port to one of the DELNIs and one
    of the front AUI ports to the other DELNI. (On both DELNIs, the
    Local/Global switch was in Local)

    In any case, DECnet performance as the transport for TAPESYS network
    backups went from about 1Gbyte per hour to about 150Mbytes per hour.

    Using a LAN Ananyzer, I was able to determine that there were no
    obvious LAN problems to account for this poor performance and after
    looking at the systems involved there were no obvious system issues
    either.

    So, just for something to try I decided to turn off "heartbeat" on one
    of the DELNIs by installing the loopback connector on the global port
    and throwing the switch to Global.

    In an instant, the backup performance jumped from very poor to as good
    if not better than before.

    I'm not sure at this point which DELNI was on the Onehub AUI port, but
    it looked to me like we were having problems on both AUI ports
    connected to DELNIs so we went ahead and configured the other DELNI the
    same way.

1098.5Works with reconfig.CGOS01::DMARLOWEHave you been HUBbed lately?Tue Jul 12 1994 05:2718
    As my other brother Dave is on holidays I went on site and did a
    reconfig.

    Apparently in the config. of .1, the DELNI's were cascaded with
    a LANbridge 150 connected to one of the top 8 local DELNI ports. The
    LB 150 worked fine but the DB 900 didn't so maybe its got something
    to do with IEEE 802.3 timing parameters. ie. 90C/T and Sun stations.

    Anyways there was a config change and the DELNI's now have DETPM's
    on the global port with a cross over cable to one of the UTP ports
    on the DB 900. Works just great. Some of the other UTP ports go via
    a cross over cable, to DETPR's and those also appear to work just
    fine.

    Anyways, everything is working just fine. Won't be able to try
    loopback connectors, etc as the network is now operational.

1098.6Good move, but still a workaroundAKRON1::SMITHSic Semper Potatum ReclinusTue Jul 12 1994 12:2712
    RE .5

    Sounds to me like you've completely bypassed the AUI ports on the
    DB900MX.....good move....

    However, just like my configuration, this seems to be a work around for
    a REAL problem.

    How about a comment from someone "in the know" about the DB900MX????

    Customers should be able to connect one of the DB900MX AUI ports to a
    DELNI configured in local mode....or shouldn't they?
