992.0. "Convert DECbridge 900 port to M port." by CGOS01::DMARLOWE (Have you been HUBbed lately?) Mon May 16 1994 07:05

    Due to the fact that the DECconcentrator 900 is so far out, we're
    being quoted August, I need to solve a problem.

    We are putting together a small FDDI ring consisting of 2 DECbridge
    900 MX's and a Sun server. The 2 bridges will supply 6 Ethernets to
    each of 2 floors with the DB 900's linked via A and B ports. Until
    we get a concentrator I assume I need to convert one of the ports on one
    of the DB 900's to a M port. How and when can I do this? I assume
    that I will need HUBWATCH V3 to do this and the OpenVMS version
    is real close. Console port do anything for me?

    I would like to do this by Wednesday this week as the customer's
    UNIX systems are beating the single Ethernet to death. Bridges
    are in the hub and ready to go.

	Only concentrators provide M ports.

	You won't have the dual ring configuration but (unless there
	is a restriction on the DAS implementation on the DB900) you
	can do this -

		DB900(A) ---- (B)DB900(A) ---- (S)Sun

    The default is for both bridges to be AB on the front - just hook them
    to each other and you have a ring. You don't need to change the port
    types.

    Is the problem the Sun Server?
992.3Needed to know before going on site.CGOS01::DMARLOWEHave you been HUBbed lately?Mon May 16 1994 19:308
    I do not need a dual ring. What I need is the following but thought
    the Sun (SAS) had to go to an M port. But if below works, then
    I can last until I get a DC 900MX in or until they get more file
    servers in and want to hook them to FDDI.

    re .2

    the problem is if you connect A--B
    				  |  |
                                  B--A

    you have no place to connect the S-port on the Sun.

    The config in .3 works fine.. it will look like a wrapped ring.

992.6No need of DAS adapter ??LFOIS1::MOUSSUso unusuaL terMTue May 31 1994 09:379
As far as I had understood the FDDI config rules, I would have bet
that a DAS adapter was required on the SUN system side to allow the
ring to wrap.

		DB900(A) ---- (B)DB900(A) ---- (A)Sun

Have I missed something ?

992.7It will work, but has no fault controlNACAD2::BATTERSBYTue May 31 1994 13:057
    Your configuration will work, but of course, the Sun will only
    be connected to the primary ring. If that SAS connection breaks
    or otherwise disrupts the (primary) ring, there would be no fault
    control. Placing a concentrator (if one was available), between
    the DB900(A) and the (A)Sun would provide this fault control.

992.8Works just great.CGOS01::DMARLOWEHave you been HUBbed lately?Tue May 31 1994 14:3715
    We have been running like the following for the last 2 weeks:

    		(A)DB900(B) ---- (A)DB900(B)

    The customer JUST managed to get the FDDI card in the SUN. We just
    took a MIC-MIC patch cord and plugged it straight into the B port
    and everything came up just fine. No configuring the DB 900. We
    will run this way until we get the DECconcentrator 900 that is on
    order.

    		(A)DB900(B) ---- (A)DB900(B) ---- (S)SUN
