798.0. "Packetprobe and long term performance analysis" by BERN01::GMUER () Mon Mar 07 1994 14:57

We have used LTMreport so far to get long term analysis about Ethernet segment
performance. We extract the data every month with a polling period of one day
in text files for further processing.

We would like to do the same with Packetprobe's 90 and ProbeWatch. Possible
alternatives for the ProbeWatch software are DECmcc or Polycenter Netview.

I have made some experiments to setup Statistics and History table entries
with SNMP sets from DECmcc, but I had no success. The Packetprobe agent came
always on a timeout. My idea was to use this data with the Historian of
DECmcc, because we use the same method for router and bridge performance.

A creation of the table entries with ProbeWatch was easy, but the
etherStatsIndex in the etherStatsTable in the RMON MIB changes at least
every day. It was impossible to upload the data with DECmcc. The wildcarded
show request get stuck in an endless loop. So I think, this was not a
clever method.

With Netview I have tried the MIB Browser. I have found the table entries
very fast, but I got problems to see all the RMON historical entries because
of timeouts. I have not made other tests because I do not know this tool
well enough.

Are there any better ideas ?

Thanks for any help

798.1completely replacing LTM reports will take a lot of workNAC::FORRESTMon Mar 07 1994 20:3710
Replacing LTM functionality with the DECpacketprobe and PROBEwatch
is a goal, however, I'm not sure how far we want to go in replacing
LTM reports - it seems like a much bigger job to get there from here.

We are planning more historical reporting from PROBEwatch though.
Look at the latest ULTRIX kit for a preview. NAC::MANAGEMENT:RMON*

The ULTRIX functionality and more should be available under OSF this
	summer.
