793.0. "DEC Packetprobe v HP Lanprobe" by SNOC02::CALEYJASON (No longer a mushroom...) Thu Mar 03 1994 21:03

    Hi,
    	Could anyone please give me a list or outline some of the
    competitive advantages that the Packetprobe/Probewatch combination
    offers over the HP Lanprobe/Probeview RMON systems??

    I have more questions that I'd greatly appreciate an answer to in NOTE
    751, if someone can spare some time.

    Regards,
    		Jason

793.1Our RMON vs HPNAC::FORRESTMon Mar 07 1994 20:2114
	DECpacketprobe 90 vs HP LanPROBE II
	We might have a little edge in processor power - 68030 vs 80386
	We have the ability to set up independent RMON collections for
	various protocol domains - eg, we can keep separate counters for
	IP, DECnet, IPX, etc. I have also heard that HP is limited to
	1 client management station at a time getting data from their
	probe. We are a hair cheaper - $2990 vs $3295, I believe.

	PROBEwatch
	I think the ease with which we set up multiple protocol domains
	is an advantage. I haven't seen their unix version, but our
	Windows version is far superior to their Windows version in
	capability. We may also do more extensive protocol decodes.
793.2Thanks! But what about...SNOC02::CALEYJASONNo longer a mushroom...Mon Mar 07 1994 22:1513
    Thanks for that!

    Ok, if we can set up protocol domains...are we able to graph the
    results as a protocol breakdown (ie: pie graph or equivalant
    identifying % of each protocol on the network)??

    Also, are there any pointers available for the Windows version of
    Probewatch and the manual/release notes??

    Regards,
    	    Jason

793.3Protocol pie charts coming...NAC::FORRESTMon Mar 14 1994 14:587
	Protocol breakdown is coming - sometime this summer. For now, you
	have to assume a list of protocols that you want to monitor and set
	up the DECpacketprobe domain for each.

	Pointers to PROBEwatch and DECpacketprobe info is at
