701.0. "DEChub 90 Config Problems..." by VNASWS::HONISCH (Guenter Honisch NSTC Austria) Mon Feb 07 1994 09:12

After some trys with the DECconnect Config SW for Transmission Model 2
    Calculations I gave up !

    I used the Image deconn.exe 1993-11-07
This SW is really a piece of ....(censored),
not even in midnight shareware hacks I got this much Problems:
    Protection Faults, hangs, miscalculations
    (no change on deleting segments)

Our local DECsite people made the same Experience...
The SW in this Status is just UNUSABLE

    The original Problem:
A quite standard DEChub 90 Config
    worst case path is:

    Endstation
    185m Thinwire
DECMR (10-BASE-2 in Hub) no Chained Hub !
    DEFAR (10-BASE-FL in Hub)
    1200 m FL Fiber
DEFMR (10-BASE-FL in Hub) no chained Hub !
    DEFMR (10-BASE-FL in Hub)
    900 m FL Fiber
    DEFAR (10-BASE-FL in Hub)
DECMR (10-BASE-2 in Hub) no Chained Hub !
    185m Thinwire
    Endstation

I believe this config is slightly above the limit, with 10-BASE-T on
the Endsegments it should be ok, but not with 185m Thinwire.

Can someone knowledgable check this ???

I know we could use Bridges, but the Customer'so other Option are Hubs
with a Interrepeater Bus without our TW Problems...

701.1Use the correct version for correct resultsKALI::BURNETTMon Feb 07 1994 17:1939
My name is Joe Burnett (KALI::BURNETT, DTN 226-6908). I am
the developer of the piece of .....censored that you are
referring to.

The problem is that you are running a field test version of the
software. Since you were not authorized to receive it, you didn't
receive the announcement that the V1.0 version is available as of
December 27, 1993.

Anyway, the answers you want are as follows:

The first system (10Base2) that you described yields the following
numbers, assuming one defmr in the middle hub:

				% MAX BIT TIME
Max Round Trip Delay (RTD):	102.5% 589.314
Max IPG Shrinkage 110.2% 54.000

The second system (10BaseT) yields the following numbers:

				% MAX BIT TIME
Max Round Trip Delay (RTD): 99.7% 573.055
Max IPG Shrinkage 99.0% 48.500

Now, if you would like to receive our V1.0 (which, by the way,
had no problem modeling your configurations), send me mail at
KALI::BURNETT, and I will send you our qualifying questionnaire
to fill out. Once I receive this, I will send you a pointer
to the released version. Of course, you could simply use
you midnight hacks for which you have expressed a preference ;-).

701.2Secret tools lack public acceptanceBIKINI::KRAUSEEuropean NewProductEngineer for MCCTue Feb 08 1994 11:1311
The pointer to the field test version was given during a DEChub 900
training. I tried it too, and it was not even worth the disk space it
used. Sorry Joe, but even a field test should be more stable.

I got the questionaire, but I'm not going to fill it in. One reason is:
I hate questionaires. Do you really expect people to formally apply for
internal tools? I sure would like to have a look at the final version to
see if it works and what I could probably use it for (I'm working in a
CSC in Network support). But if you keep it like a secret - keep it.

701.3Questionnaires allow continued developmentKALI::BURNETTTue Feb 08 1994 11:3119
The field test was more public than I would have liked, but we
had no choice. If there were problems, why weren't they reported?
That is what field tests are for.

As far as the questionnaire is concerned, the tool is distributed
free of charge. The only way we have to justify continued development
and support is to know how many people are using it, and for what
purpose. Over 200 people have taken the time (2 minutes?) to fill
it out.

Anyway, if you don't want to complete the questionnaire, that's up
to you. You can always do these calculations by hand. I'm sure in
less time than it takes to fill out the questionnaire ;-).

Joe

701.4WE ARE REGISTERED !VNASWS::HONISCHGuenter Honisch NSTC AustriaThu Feb 10 1994 18:2816
Sorry, but we got it officially !
DECsite Austria Erwin Thueringer joined the fieldtest, and was official
    registered!
I used the tool at his machine...
He told me that's the newest version he knows of

I am not in the office, and on vacation the next 4wks
so I can't respond anymore before mid march

    About Quality:
I am 17 yrs with DEC now, normally I expect a FT to work at least a
little bit, but this Version is just something much less than FT
    Quality...
I am going to try the next Version and will send You my Opinion !
