700.0. "DECHUB900 CONFIGURATION QUESTIONS" by BACHUS::HANON () Mon Feb 07 1994 09:11

	Hello,

I'm trying to make a configuration with DEChub900 products.
My customer wants a collapsed backbone network with 8 concentration
points and one central hub in his computerroom.
In the central hub I need at least 9 separated ethernet segments.
In each concentration point, I need 5 ethernet segments wich are
physically connected via F.O. to the central hub. The users in the
concentration points must have the possibility to connect to each
Ethernet segment of the central hub. In each concentration point hub
my customer wants a module to connect localtalk users.
	Here are some questions:
	- If I use a DECrepeater 900FL ( 12 port FOIRL, port switching) in the
central hub, to how many Ethernet channels can I connect?, how do I
configure this ( via Hubwatch but wich version do I need and when will
	this version be available )?
	- In the central hub I have to bridge between the 9 ethernets. Suppose
I use a one to six ethernet bridge. Can I bridge between 1 external
connection on the bridge to six internal channels? Wich channels
( is a connection to the thinwire channel mandatory, why )?
If I put a second one to six ethernet bridge in the hub, to how many
channels other than the six channels used with the first bridge can I
connect. How do I configure this ( hubwatch, wich version, when).
	- If I propose a Distributed FDDI backbone, same question on the
number of channels insite the HUB. How many channels available for
FDDI, how many for Ethernet? How to configure? When?
	- What about the phonenet users?

If someone could give me clear answers on those configuration
questions, I would be very thankfull.

Then you need more than one hub; the most you can get in one is 7
(6 flexible channels and the thinwire) using current or upcoming
products.

The 'concentration point' hubs would then be 5 DETMM, each configured
to be on a separate Ethernet, and a DECbridge 900MX. The bridge would
be configured to bridge the 5 backplane ethernets and provide the
connection back to the central hub(s).

The connection back to the 'center' could be:

o The FDDI interface provided by the bridge, in which case the
central hub would need DECconcentrator 900MXs

  -or-
o Use the 6th Ethernet to connect to a Fiber Ethernet repeater
(DEFAR or DEFMI), in which case the center would need Fiber
      ethernet modules (probably DEFMM).

6.

You'll need HUBwatch V3.x (I don't do dates)

You can bridge from the 1 FDDI to/from/between 6 ethernets, but each
ethernet must be either front (external) or backplane (internal) - no
interface can be both.

> ( is a connection to the thinwire channel mandatory,why )?

No.

> If I put a second one to six ethernet bridge in the hub, to how many

As above - the maximum you can have on the backplane is 7 no matter
what you do.

See note 651.0 on FDDI configuration in the hub. Again, you'll need
HUBwatch V3.X.

> - What about the phonenet users?

Phonenet is a proprietary wiring scheme not directly supported by the
hub; if you can bridge/route its traffic onto Ethernet you can use any
repeater or bridge port to get it into/through the hub.
