663.0. "DECserver 900 & FLASH EEPROM ???" by ZTOIS1::VISTA (Renato VISTA, MCS/SPS France/Strasbourg) Wed Jan 26 1994 08:31

    Hi,

    I've installed a DECserver 900TM within a DEChub 900 (MS version
    2.2.1).

After having downline loaded the DECserver 900 with NAS 1.3 BL77-27,
configuring TCPIP/SNMP correctly locally, configuring UCX & HUBwatch
database, all is working correctly (ie getting graphical windows from
DECserver 900 both directly & via DEChub/IP Services MAM).

When I'm using the optional FLASH HW extension inserted in the
DECserver900 (NAS 1.1, BL55-16), the DECserver 900 is locally correctly
initialized, but some differences have occurred :

    	1) the loaded image sees the DECserver 900 as a DECserver 700-32
    	2) the DEChub 900 has notified a NON fatal failure, both on the
little round-robin console screen located above the DEChub, and via
    	SNMP (enterprise slottable)
    	3) using HUBwatch via DEChub/IP Services MAM), it is not possible
to communicate with the DECserver 900 nor getting information by
    	double-clicking on module/DECserver 900 icon
    	4) using HUBwatch by giving the DECserver 900 IP address in the /IP
qualifier of $watch/agent VMS command, it works correctly

    My questions are :

    	1) is the nonFatalFailure due to the NAS V1.1 of the optional FLASH
    	EEPROM ?
    	2) is there a more recent version of this FLASH EEPROM ?
    	3) is is due to the DEChub MS version itself, ie is this a known
    	problem ?

    Thank you for help
    Renato

663.1The Problem is NAS V1.1 vs NAS V1.3LEVERS::DRAGONWed Jan 26 1994 12:239

    Renato,

The problem you are seeing is due to the NAS V1.1 software being
run rather than the NAS V1.3.

As for what versions are being shipped, I'm not sure on that one.

    Renato,

The version of software which you should be running is NAS V1.3
        BL80-27.

We do have a problem with the Flash cards for the DECservers; they are
shipped from manufacturing separately to distributors (and possibly
Digital depots) and stockpiled there. When a new version is released,
they don't get updated but have the same part number. So when you
order one, you CANNOT KNOW whether or not you will get the latest
    version.

In your case it is especially bad because V1.1 was meant only for the
DECserver 700; since the 900 is mostly just a hub version with more
ports, it actually works for most purposes, but it is not the right
    software.

Whenever you get any downline-loadable device, check to make sure that
    it has the latest image.
