645.0. "Manageable module with 200m link length ?" by HGOVC::GUPTA () Fri Jan 21 1994 07:48

    Hi,

    I need a SNMP manageable module which can give me link length of around
    200 meters. I need to connect some 50-60 workstations 200meters from
    the hub.

    We are bidding for a big government tender in Hong Kong. There are some
    sites where, workstations will be around 200 meters from the computer
    centre.

    We were thinking of putting two hubs connected by fibre. But that will
    mean installing the second hub outside the computer centre. This is
    what customer (Immegration Deptt) CANNOT afford - no place to keep the
    second hub on HK Airport and some other places. They want all the
    equipment inside the computer room.

    I thought thin-wire could serve it. DECrepeater 90C comes to mind but
    IT IS NOT MANAGEABLE ON ITS OWN. Any DEChub 900 SNMP manageable module
    for thin-wire ? ANY OTHER OPTION ?

    Regards,
    Gupta

645.1Please clarifyQUIVER::SLAWRENCEMon Jan 24 1994 13:592
    But the DECrepeater90C is managable in a hub, which you have in the
    computer room - what is the problem?
645.290C management needs TWO more modulesHGOVC::GUPTAMon Jan 24 1994 23:2310
    Ref .1:

    In order to manage DECrepeater 90C, two more modules (DECbridge 90 and
    DECagent 90) and hence two more scarce slots of DEChub 900 will be
    needed. Sorry if I have missed it but are there any thin-wire repeaters
    with an SNMP agent built into it. Had heard about some such module for
    DEChub 900 but not sure of the current plans.

645.3DECagent 90 and DECbridge 90 Not NeededLEVERS::DRAGONTue Jan 25 1994 11:446

    In the DEChub 900 you will not have to give up 2 slots, since
    the DECbridge 90 and DECagent 90 are NOT needed in DEChub 900 to manage
    the DECrepeater 90C.

645.4Use the 90CDELNI::GIUNTATue Jan 25 1994 13:478
    The DECrepeater 90C is manageable in the DEChub 900 without having to
    use the DECagent 90 or DECbridge, so it should meet your criteria of
    being managed and not using the extra slots. Although I have plans for
    future ThinWire repeaters, it's probably too far out to be of use to
    you now.

    Cathy
645.5don't always need the agent in the hubPERE::BRUCEThu Feb 03 1994 13:174
    this may be a stupid suggestion but the agent doesnt have to go in the
    hub. it might be good to get the powersupply and run it indendantly.
    but I am sure you thought of that
