559.0. "DECbridge900 (FDDI - Ethernet) config question" by ZUR01::SCHNEIDERR () Mon Dec 13 1993 12:45

Hello,

On the Ethernet -FDDI bridge 900 you can choose to have the FDDI ports
eighter on the backplane or on the frontpannel. I can't mix it up (front and
backplane)

My question:
Can I mix up the 6 Ethernetchannels? Example, can I config 4 Backplanechannels
and the two AUI ports on the frontpannels?

Yes, each port will be switchable between front bezel and backplane.

Note that the HUBwatch support for this will _not_ be available for the
early ship versions of the bridge (it will lag by a couple of months).

Thanks for your answer

If I understand you correct, HUBwatch will be not ready for that function. So we
have to wait for HUBwatch V2.1 (or 2.2, 3.0, or whatever).
Is it possible to do the configuration during the meantime through an other SNMP
tool (brouser like MCC)?

Yes, it will be possible. It probably won't be easy, but it'll be possible.
(I can't give you an example right now because the MIB for these operations
is still being defined.)

It turns out that this is the answer to any question of the form:

Is it possible to do <your favorite operation supported by the DEChub900>
    through an other SNMP tool...

Since we support standard protocols (SNMP/UDP/IP) and make our private MIB
publicly available it will always be *possible* to use an adequate MIB browser
to perform the same operations as HubWatch. But again, it may not be *easy*.

Also note - there will probably be a firmware upgrade between the early
ship and the release of HUBwatch V3.X. It seems likely that the MIB to
control this and other new features will not have been excersized as
thoroughly in the early version and may contain some problems.

Shawn,

Thanks.....I know that it is never easy to use a MIB browser (have you ever
played arround in the RMON MIB through a browser? --> uuuahhh $%@@#*& ugly).

But we need to do such configurations. We try to use HUB900 at any new project
and we are waiting for the bridge. It's a greate product (on the fleyer) but we
need it now (doesn't matter if we have to config it through a MIB browser).

559.6MCC procedures could do the jobBIKINI::KRAUSEEuropean NewProductEngineer for MCCThu Dec 16 1993 07:139
I could imagine writing MCC procedures to accomplish certain
configuration tasks. This would help as a workaround until HUBwatch V3.0
hits the street. If you could arrange to send me a seed unit I would
volunteer to develop such procedures.

The demand for the DECbridge 900 (both MX and MP) is high and we will
run into severe problems if we can't configure them.
