528.0. "DECrepeater 900TM - Automatic port shutdown of jabbering node?" by FOGDOG::STUART (Scott Stuart - MARVA Network Sales Support DTN 341-3132 - MARVA District) Mon Nov 29 1993 13:23

I am replying to an rfp and proposing the DECrepeater 900TM.
Does it 'provide automatic port shutdown in the event of
a jabbering node'?

If yes, where are their details on what it does?

thanks ... scott

528.1DECrepeater 900TM can't, but others willLEVERS::PAGLIAROMon Nov 29 1993 14:1012
    The short answer to this question is: No, the DECrepeater 900TM does
    not 'provide automatic port shutdown in the event of a jabbering node'.

    However, all but one hub-based repeaters currently planned for future
    release will have the ability to (optionally) auto-partition a port if a
    jabbering node is detected. They will also auto-reconnect the port when the
    jabbering stops. The one exception is the DECrepeater 90TS, an 8-port
    10BaseT "half-height" form factor repeater.

528.2DECrepeater 900GM won't do it eitherLEVERS::PAGLIAROMon Nov 29 1993 14:535
    The DECrepeater 900GM (24-port TELCO 10BaseT repeater) will also NOT
    support automatic port shutdown in the event of a jabbering node.

528.4How does DECrepeater900TM do auto-partition?TLAV02::WITTAYAJWed Jun 08 1994 11:0216
    Hi anybody,
     I have used Hubwatch for windows v2.0 and it seem ok.
    However,DECrepeater900TM can not do auto-partition when my customer has
    connected a ethernet card that it is wrong . It does jabber or
    collide but CISCO router disconnect that network.I mean all station in
    this network was disconnected.It is very serious!!

    1. How does DECrepeater 900TM do auto-partition?
    2. If it do, How can I disable auto-partition reconnect? ( User
    does not want it if it does auto-partition because ethernet card error.
    I think they want to known and change it.)
    3. If it do not support auto-partition, When does it support and how ?

    Thank you,
    Best regards,
      Tony

    Tony,

    A DECrepeater 900TM will auto-partition a port if the port detects an
    excessive number of consecutive collisions or an excessively long collision
    event. This complies with the IEEE 802.3 repeater standard. The port will
    automatically reconnect if it successfully transmits OR receives a frame
    without detecting a collision. You cannot disable auto-partition reconnect
    but you can configure the repeater to reconnect an auto-partitioned port
    ONLY if it successfully transmits a frame without a collision. This can be
    configured in the repeater module summary screen in HUBwatch. This more
    stringent reconnection algorithm might not help you solve your problmen,
    however.

    See note 702.* for more discussion on this topic.

    You mentioned that your customer connected a bad ethernet card. Can you
    describe in greater detail the failure mode of the ethernet card and also
    your network configuration? It might help me answer your questions better.

    Regards,

    Rich
