FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CISCO ROUTERS TO SUPPORT SNMP VERSION 2
BASED ON IMPLEMENTATION FROM SNMP RESEARCH

MENLO PARK, Calif., Nov. 1, 1993 -- Cisco Systems internetwork
routers will support version 2 of the Simple Network Management
Protocol (SNMP) beginning in the second half of 1994, the company
has announced.
Cisco has licensed the SNMP v2 implementation developed by SNMP
Research, Inc., of Knoxville, Tenn., and has begun work on
integrating the protocol into Cisco products.
The second-generation version of the industry-standard SNMP
management protocol, SNMP v2 has been proposed as a new industry
standard and is currently in the RFC (Request For Comment)
process within the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF).
Heidi Iacurto, Cisco product marketing manager, said Cisco's
CiscoWorks router management software and SNMP v2 "together
address critical user concerns about the secure administration of
large networks. For example, while the CiscoWorks Security Manager
can authorize a network manager to change a router configuration,
SNMP v2 adds an authentication mechanism which ensures that a
configuration change order also originates from a valid CiscoWorks
station."
Cisco customers also have shown marked interest in SNMP v2
because it offers more comprehensive error information than the
earlier version of the protocol, as well as more efficient bulk
retrieval of large files such as routing tables, Iacurto added.
Cisco will continue to offer SNMP v1 concurrently with SNMP v2,
providing "bilingual" support as long as users require it.
SNMP Research founder and president Jeffrey Case said, "It is
noteworthy that the leading router vendor, and the first to
publicly commit support for SNMP v2, has chosen SNMP Research's
offering. A related product, our EMANATE [Enhanced Management
Through Extensions] tool, is being used to let different groups
within Cisco's router software team develop management agent
components independently, and have them work together when the
project is completed."
Cisco Systems, Inc., is the leading worldwide supplier of high-
performance, multimedia and multiprotocol internetworking
products, including routers, bridges, communication servers and
router management software. Cisco technology is used to build
enterprise-wide networks linking an unlimited number of
geographically dispersed LANs, WANs and IBM SNA networks. In the
United States, Cisco is traded over the counter under the NASDAQ
symbol CSCO.
