458.0. "Packetprobe Console Problem" by DPDMAI::DAVIES (Mark, SCA Area Network Consultant) Fri Oct 29 1993 18:23

I have just gotten a Packetprobe 90. I plugged in the power and
connected it to the local thinwire ethernet. The DC OK light is on.

    Next I plugged in a DB9 connector (H8571-B) and connected a VT340. I
depressed RETURN twice (as stated in the Users Guide) and got nothing.
    I tried 300/1200/2400/9600.

    ANy clues?

    Thanks,

    Mark

The Packetprobe 90, Brouter 90 ,and OBM port on the DEChub 900 MS all
use the H8571-J version of the DB9 connector.

The H8571-B will NOT work (wrong pinout). You need an H8571-J !

458.4More ProblemsDPDMAI::DAVIESMark, SCA Area Network ConsultantSun Nov 07 1993 15:3736

I am now using an H8571-J at 9600bps and I am receiving readable ouptut
from the DECprobe. What I am receiving is as follows:

    <00:00:00> Agent Ready
<00:00:00> Free Memory after init = 839588 Bytes
    <00:00:00> Agent Serial#: 10657989
    <00:00:00> IFN 1 MAC address: 08-00-2b-a2-a0-c5
<00:00:00> Free memory after boot = 927104 Bytes
<00:00:00> MIBMGR: Collector activated for Interface 1
    <00:00:00> Code Executing from EPROM
    <00:00:00> AGENT Version 1.0
    <00:00:00> NVRAM Version 2.0
    <00:00:00> Link time Aug 09 15:05:30 1993
<00:00:00> Interface [1] IP Addr: Not configured
    			     NetMask: Not configured
    			     GW Addr: Not Configured

The problem NOW is that I keep receiving this message over and over and
over and over and over ...

How do you stop the display so that you get to the MENU specified in
    the Release Notes?

Also, I have yet to see the Network Activity LED light up. The manual
says that this unit should be operating out of FLASH NVRAM. This one
says it is operating out of EPROM.

   What now?

    Thanks,

    Mark

Hello,

We have exactly the same problem here. Is there any solution to fix it????? We
use H8571-J, too.

The Packetprobe has a bug which causes this to occur in some units.
Contact product managemnt for more info (Jack Forrest @LKG).

458.7Fix identified to the menu scrolling bugNAC::FORRESTThu Dec 23 1993 20:0015
First, make sure that you are using the H7827-BA power supply for
standalone use, not the -AA. The problem is voltage sensitive, and
the modules may work in some hubs.

We have a fix for the menu scrolling bug mentioned in .4 - it
will require a ROM change. If you can get your probes back to
me, I will get them upgraded and back out to you. This affects
	only DECpacketprobe 90 rev A01.

	Send your probes to

458.8Using H8571-J but ...DGOSW0::GUESDONMon Mar 07 1994 14:4815
    Hello,

I'm trying to configure a packetprobe, using an H8571-J adapter, and
nothing appears on my VT screen (I've tried some different DEC423
    cables)

When I plug my packetprobe in a DEChub 900MS, Hubwatch sees it and
detect the good hardware Ethernet address, but asks me to configure an
    IP address.

What could be the source of my problem ?

    Thanks.

    Michel.
458.9Try changing terminal setupNAC::FORRESTMon Mar 14 1994 20:2514
Michel, I don't know what the problem is. Do you see anything on
	the terminal, e.g. garbage characters?

You might try playing with the VT Setup in the following areas,
where we have had problems previously.

	1. Try setting the terminal to enable modem control signals

	2. Try increasing the XON/XOFF buffer size to 256, if your
	   terminal supports this.

Send me mail, and we can try working this offline and post the
	findings here.

and it just goes on repeating like this forever.

#3 off (in DH900, thinwire or UTP)
    #4 off

This is the replacement unit that field service brought on site less
than a week ago and the fourth unit on site in several weeks. I left my
unit, running the latest code, and everything seems fine. I can't
figure out why so many replacement units haven't worked. This unit is
    Rev A01 with SN AS41911456.

Is it possible units with the incorrect ROM are getting shipped back
    into the field?

Matbe I'll log a call for the customer and request something newer than
    Rev A01.

Any ideas as to what is happening?
