238.0. "Management Traffic Overhead ?" by BAHTAT::TAYLOR () Fri May 14 1993 11:19

  Hello folks,

    I have to try and provide some information in support of a customer bid
 giving the anticipated levels of traffic caused by using HUBwatch as a
 management tool.

    Before anyone yells "How long is a piece of string" or "How deep is the
 ocean" all I want to get is some rough ballpark numbers to give an estimate.

  1. How much traffic would be generated during an initial connection to an
 agent to build up the "picture" of a fully configured Hub.

  2. How much traffic would be generated when "opening up" a single port on
 a terminal server/repeater.

  3. How much traffic would be generated when retrieving the statistics from
 a DECbridge 90.

     If anyone out there has monitored (or could check) all or any of the
 above I would be most grateful for the info.

   regards,

       Richard.

Here's some statistics from one of our hubs. It's a double-backplane with
the following modules in the following slots:
	1: DECserver90TL		9:DS90L++
	3: DECserver90M			12: thinwire rptr
	4: twisted-pair repeater	14: DS90M
	7: DECagent90			15: fibre repeater
	8: DECbridge90			16: DS90TL

	Hub summary view (double-hub, 10 modules):
		24 SNMP packets.
		avg of 10.3 OID's per packet.

	Terminal server summary view: (DS90TL)
		15 SNMP packets.	(this will vary depending on how many
		avg 5.8 OID's / pkt	 ports have logged-in users)

	Bridge:
		(Here I brought up the bridge summary view, and then I also
		 brought up the traffic graph window):
		13 SNMP packets.
		avg 7.3 OID's/pkt

I misread your original note... If you just click on a port from
the front panel on either a terminal server or a repeater, this is
what you get:

	DS90TL PORT:
		2 SNMP packets
		(15 OID's + 1 OID)

	REPEATER PORT:
		2 SNMP packets
		(8 OID's + 2 OID's)
		There were no stations connected to this repeater port;
		there may be more packets if there are connected stations.
