151.0. "hubwatch not working with DS90l" by CITYFS::POPPINS () Tue Feb 09 1993 03:28

    Hi all,
            a customer of ours has had some problems with HUBwatch and the
    DECagent. Using the pointers in earlier notes we supplied the latest
    s/w
    to the Customer which have been installed. DECbridge 90 now at Rev
    3.0
    HUBwatch and DECagent 90 appear to be now working successfully but
    HUBwatch cannot connect to the DECserver 90TL (at Rev 1.1). DECserver
    90TL is operating OK.

    Options are at the following Revs

    DECagent90      HW=D01  :ROM    BL05.00  :SW    V1.0

    DECserver90TL   V 1.1   :ROM    2.0.0    :BL44-10

    DECbridge90     V1.14   :FPROM  V3.0

    With DECwatch you can attach the 90TL and it is accepted. On first viewing
    of Bridge the 90TL shows up, then shows as an error and drops out.
    This is a visual indicator only as the 90TL is operating OK.

            Has anyone seen a similar problem and point us to a solution?

            Thanks in advance

151.1The 90TL is not a good hub citizenKALI::GAUDETTue Feb 09 1993 11:5012
    Chris, I'm not sure what you mean by "latest software" ... V1.0 of
    HUBwatch does not support the 90TL. V1.0 of the agent firmware will
    recognize the existence of a 90TL in the hub. However, there's a
    problem with the 90TL in that once its image is loaded it no longer
    talks on the backplane of the hub. This means that it "disappears"
    from the managed environment.

    If you're running a field test version of HUBwatch which supports the
    90TL, you'll have to add it manually with agent polling disabled.
    That's the only way the 90TL will stay in the agent's view of the hub.

Hello Chris,

This is just for your Info: Be careful with BRIDGE V3.0. There is a problem
with V3.0 in the spanning tree. We had it here by two customers. There is
already a V3.1 version, with fixes the problem.
 The problem is: after a topology change the bridge 90 30 stops to forward data
for 30 seconds and so you loose all your LAT connections, for example.

    This is unfortunately the case. For some very legitimate techincal
    reasons related to limitations of the hardware (which I don't want to
    go into here), the current software for DS90TL does not respond to the
    backplane management messages. The firmware, however, still does.

    This restriction will be fixed in new software releases, starting in
    March. At least for DS90TLs upgraded to 4 MB of memory. Plans to
    put this fix in the 1 MB software are still pending.

    Regards,

    Dave

151.4This is how you manage a DS90TL w/HUBwatchSLINK::HOODJust add waterWed Feb 17 1993 20:3412
To manage a DS90TL in a backplane, do the following:

* Select the appropriate "empty" slot in HUBwatch.
* HUBwatch "Configuration" pull-down menu. "Add" Option.
* Enter the name, type, MAC, IP adrs, community info.
* Make sure "Enable Status Polling" pushbotton is OFF! (out position).
* Hit OK

From this point on, the DECserver90tl will continue to live in the agent's
slot table and be manageable by HUBwatch.

    You also need field test versions of the agent software and HUBwatch to
    do what was suggested in the previous note. See
    EMDS::MANAGMENT:VMS_LAUNCH.TXT for a complete explaination.
