106.0. "Hubwatch and DECbridge 90 for LAN stats?" by ONOIS1::GAIRNS () Mon Dec 21 1992 16:34

    Can you help me with the following question?:

    Can I use HUBwatch in conjunction with a DECbridge 90 to determine the
    ethernet utilisation on each side of the bridge.

    ie being a parsimonious Scot, I want as much info as possible out of
    the bridge concerning what is happening on each ethernet segment as
    well as the transit packet details.

    If I can have it displayed on flashy graphs as well I'll lash out on a
    downpayment on the power cable immediately.

    Thanks for your help

106.1See the Filter screen on V1.0NOHOST::LEVINBryan, LENaC Engineering, MLO3-3/U39Mon Dec 21 1992 17:3532
    YES!

    Check out the Ultrix V1.0 HUBwatch. Use the 'summary screen' for the
    WGB90. Then, bring up the 'filter screen'. If you enable polling
    ('utilization graph ... Enable Display'), you'll see a red and green
    graph, divided in half. The left-hand side (to the left of the black
    dividing bar) is the backbone traffic. The right has the workgroup
    traffic.

    To interpret this graph, think of RED as BLOCKING. This means the
    amount of traffic that is STOPPED (filtered) at a particular side of
    the bridge. GREEN represents the traffic FLOWING THRU the bridge.

    This means that if you add the RED and GREEN pieces (on a particular
    side of the bridge), you'll get the TOTAL traffic on that side.
    Similarly, if you add all 4 segments (both greens and both reds),
    you'll get the ENTIRE traffic spectrum 'seen' on both sides of the
    bridge. So, each colored segment is a percentage OF THE WHOLE that is
    stopped/forwarded on a side.

    Note, that there are 3 of these 'graph strips'. The top graph shows
    the 'instantaneous' rate (a ratio of 'delta' values). The middle is
    meant to serve as a 'holder' or snapshot, that when the user presses
    the snapshot button, a copy of the top graph is saved in the middle
    region. The bottom (third) region is the long-term average. It's like
    the a ratio of 'total delta' values. However, a simulation of 'zeroing
    counters' can be done by the 'reset average' button. This saves the
    current counter values, and makes all future references [while this
    screen remains up and running] RELATIVE to these frozen values. Again,
    it really does not zero the bridges counters, but acts like it does.

106.2Will the PC Hubwatch platform sufficeONOIS1::GAIRNSTue Dec 22 1992 07:2812
    That's great news... Can I take the question a bit further?

    I have one backbone segment and three workgroup segments.

    Can I put three DECbridge 90s plus the DECagent in one Hub?

    The customer doesn't currently have Ultrix so can the PC version of
    Hubwatch offer the same info as the Ultrix V1.0

    Thanks for your help

106.3Sorry, only on the V1.0 (and maybe 1.1)NOHOST::LEVINBryan, LENaC Engineering, MLO3-3/U39Tue Dec 22 1992 11:1212
    >can the PC version offer the same info as the Ultrix V1.0

    I don't believe the PC version has this graph. There may be other
    graphs possible, but the idea of this kind of graph came to me rather
    late, and was not planned for when the PC project was conceived.

    Also, I think there is a different kind of graph in the next 1.1
    ultrix/vms version. [Field test reviewers note: you might want to get
    a hold of T1.1 to compare. I know it has different screens than did
    the V1.0 product].

106.4re .3 Can you clarify the Vn 1.1 remark?ONOIS1::GAIRNSTue Dec 22 1992 14:5810
    Re .3

    Do you mean that the info/presentation may disappear in the future
    version? (1.1)

    If I use an Ultrix or VMS Platform. Is DECmcc a pre-requisite?

    (I'm running out of questions. Thanks for your help)

106.5Bridge data in Windows version, etcEMDS::SEAVERLENAC Net Mgnt Mktg 223-4573Mon Dec 28 1992 13:0915
    1.1 has the same type of information in a graphical format. Should be
    a new field test version available within a week and you are on the
    distribution list to receive a notice about it.

    DECmcc is not a prerequisite for HUBwatch. All is provides is a map
    of the network.

    Windows has the information in a tabular format. It is under bridge
    performance.

    In a previous note you asked about using three bridges in one hub. The
    answer is no! YOu can only have two slots that can hold either bridges
    or agents. YOu can use two bridges in one hub and an agent outside the
    hub tho.
