1011.0. "Does Exchange's dis lists have a character limit?" by BIGQ::SILVA (http://www.ziplink.net/~glen/decplus/) Fri Apr 18 1997 18:12

	Does Exchange mail have a limit to how many characters a distribution
list can have?

	I made a distribution list, and it failed. I did it by mailing a vms
distribution list to exchange, opening it in Word, and did the following:

		changed all carriage returns with a ; <---there is a space

	I then copied it into an exchange distribution list I made. It then
went through and every address that wasn't in the internet format, it would ask
for a change. I used ELF to make the changes. And then saved it, and it failed.

	I then did the same thing, but just used the internet addresses and
omitted the vms formatted addresses. It worked fine.

	So I then did the same thing, but took SOME of the vms formatted
addresses and converted them with elf, and that worked. So I went and redid the
whole distribution list, and it failed.

	The list has about 150 people on it. I hate to keep redoing the thing,
so...... is this too much for exchange to handle?

    Hmmm ... is a 'dis list' the people you send put-down mail to?

	Ummmm..... yeah. :-)

    I have distribution lists with over over 500 entries - no problems.

    Perhaps you could amplify on "it failed" - for example, after Exchange
    checked all the names, were you able to save the list, or did it save
    OK but fail when you tried to use it?
1011.4Failures on "recipient lists"THEBAY::WIEGLEBLast day is May 2. Farewell!Fri Apr 18 1997 21:4319
    I've also had problems with Exchange recipient lists of 89 recipients.
    (I refer to "recipient list" rather than "distribution list" because
    the 89 recipients were entered into the message header directly rather
    than stored in a distribution list entity.)

    All of the recipient names were correctly verified with a "Check Names"
    operation, but attempts to send failed until I reduced the recipient
    list to a subset of about 30 names. Each send failed with a message of
    "Item could not be sent. The client operation failed."

    I am running Exchange V5.0 "Gold" client. The send attempts were made
    while connected via an Ethernet link, not a slow link like a dial-up.

    I failed to be impressed with the recipient list handling capabilities.

    Were the large "distribution lists" that previous Noters were talking
    about "recipient lists" or "distribution lists"?

	It saved all the names just fine. But when using the full list is
where it failed.

    	I just sent a message to my group, using 220 "internet-style" ad-
    	dresses [user@node.enet.dec.com]. I'll let you know if it goes
    	through.

    	Well, it sent OK, but we'll see if I get a delayed error.

	How does one take a list in place now, and check it for errors?
1011.9BIGQ::SILVAhttp://www.ziplink.net/~glen/decplus/Tue Apr 29 1997 03:4712

	Does anyone else have a problem when mailing to a distribution list
where it will sit for a long time before the message is actually sent? It can
take up to 2-3 minutes with a .dis list of 150. Is it the machine, do I have
something turned on that I shouldn't? I'm at a loss.

Thanks,

Glen

    	There was no noticeable delay when I sent to 200+ people.

    	What kind of machine, and what specs does it have? CPU, memory?
1011.11BIGQ::SILVAhttp://www.ziplink.net/~glen/decplus/Thu May 01 1997 22:1013

	Memory is 32 meg so I don't think that is the issue. But whenever
sending mail to a large dis list, it hangs forever....

	Does it check names when it sends? And if so, is there a way to shut
this option off just when sending mail, or does it have to be on all the time?
It comes in handy when making dis lists.

How are you connected to the network?
Directly, or are you dialing in?
1011.13BIGQ::SILVAhttp://www.ziplink.net/~glen/decplus/Fri May 02 1997 00:153

	Directly.
