1042.0. "Info on Digital's NT rollout?" by WOTVAX::lzodhcp-182-48-148.lzo.dec.com::hiltong (hiltong@mail.dec.com) Tue Apr 29 1997 21:46

Are there any whitepapers which give an overview of how/why Digital
has rolled out NT, what we use for system mgmnt, backup, the domain
model we chose etc etc?

This is to discuss with a customer.

Thanks,

Greg

Greg,

Most of the NT Program docs are at
	\\gpsnote1\gpswinnt

They're (Digital Internal) public. You should probably
contact the authors before using in a customer presentation.

I'm sure some of your questions are answered there, though
perhaps not the big one (why NT?).

    Er, surely it's because that's the best (only) thing to run Exchange?
1042.3The NT decision came before Exchangetunsrv2-tunnel.imc.das.dec.com::fosterStan Foster - foster@mail.dec.comThu May 01 1997 06:0217
We dont use NT because Exchange needs it. Its more the other way
around. We use Exchange because it was the best (best integrated,
most complete, most scalable etc) groupware product available on NT
when we started this project two years ago (and arguably the best
still today). The NT infrastructure is three times the size of
the Exchange deployment and is used for Authentication, WINS/DHCP,
File, Print, RAS, Web and database applications as well as groupware.

The Digital NT domain supports 50,000+ users using the two-tiered
multi-master domain model (the only model that can scale to this
size) and we currently have 42,000 Exchange users in the "production"
network with probably another 1000+ in various sattelite networks
that may or may not be integrated at some point in the future.

Thats why MaryEllen says the bigger question is why NT and the NT
based distributed run-time environment, not why Exchange.
