959.0. "PST file does not get any smaller ?" by COPCLU::dhcp57.dmo.dec.com::larsen_b () Tue Mar 25 1997 18:21

HI

A user has a .PST file wich is about 100MB and he is about to delete a lot of
mails to save some space on his harddisk (where the PST is placed) But the
PST file does not get smaller - does anybody has an idea of why ???

We have also tried the compress utillity (tools->services->exchange server->advanced)

Thanks
Bitten

After using the Delete key, have you actually emptied the 'Deleted
Items' folder before using the Compress option?

Notice that what you did in .0 compacts your OST, not your PST. The
service to choose is "personal folder", as suggested in .3, not
    "exchange server".

I doubt this is it, but just in case...

Did you deleted the mail in the "Deleted Items" folder in the personal
folders? You have to do so in each group of folders.

Deleting the mail in the mailbox folder doesn't do so in the personal.

Yes - this too, I have deleted from the right "deleted items" folder.

Just for kicks, try creating a brand new blank PST service.

Copy all items from the old PST to the new one and see if that causes
a reduction in size between the two files.

Reason: Have had to deal with MMF's in MSMail 3.2 in past that were
irrecoverably corrupted and bloated. Once all items were copied to a
new file, we were ok. Very Rare occurence, though.
