917.0. "GAL distribution" by HYDRA::LAVIN () Tue Mar 04 1997 21:46

I know this must have been asked before but...Is there any reason why
or is there any plan to share the GAL with exchange sites that are not
within DIGITALx? That's basically the only thing that makes it desireable
to join the company Exchange core and attached sites...Is there any reason
why this could not be made a distributeable quantity?

    Why don't you use MAPI ELF on the client side and then you don't need
    to worry about the GAL at all?

	That's fine if you can get everyone to update their elf entries...

    Well - all the DigitalX Exchange users seem to have their email address
    correctly populated in ELF V3 - which is all the Exchange GAL seems to
    hold, plus ELF will give you the address of many non-exchange users.

Unfortunately, it's not all Exchange users (or even all users
of the CCS Exchange service). I understand that entries are
automatically added during bulk loads (when a group migrates
to Exchange), but not for the individuals. Not positive, but
it may also be US-only.

So, Exchange users should check their ELF entry & update
if necessary.

Re: the original question - this is not the best place to
ask - I don't think those who manage Exchange hang out here
much. The people to talk to would be Mike Grady, the Exchange
Program Manager, or Dan Martin, the Messaging Business Mgr.

...I agree that ELF V3 is probably the only real employee list left if there
   could be a "mandate" to get everyone to check their elf entries that would
probably solve the problems for most exchange users in the company...

917.6What about contractors?SNOFS1::OP_RTRICHARD TOZERThu Mar 06 1997 10:197
    re -1

    The last time I looked ELF v3 did not have contractors. Until it does
    I would not consider it "the only real employee list left".

    Contractors aren't in the regular ELF database either. I'm not in the
    GAL, since I don't have an Exchange account, and "they" won't (see
    other replies here) give me an entry pointing to some other mail
    system. Hence the GAL is by no means a complete list either.

    ELF is still the best list around, unless you can tell us about a
    generally available better one.

    Thanks Chaps, but you missed the smiley on the end of my title. My,
    rather obscurely made point, being that unless you are an Exchange user
    on the corporately supported Exchange network, then the GAL is no use
    to you. Hence ELF remains the only source of address information.
