910.0. "Outlook forces network re-logon" by BBRDGE::LOVELL () Thu Feb 27 1997 11:14

    I've installed the Outlook client on my office PC and also on my home
    PC. I connect to the corporate Exchange server (in DIGITAL2) via our
    normal office LAN and via the CCS RAS service when dialing from home.

    Everything in the office works OK. When starting Outlook from my home
    PC, it always insists on re-prompting me to enter my password for the
    DIGITAL2 domain (which I have already entered to get the RAS connection
    to work). If I enter the password, it proceeds to work normally.

    This is not a huge problem, it just annoys me greatly. Why does it do
    this?

    /Chris/

    Note: I have been in to the Tools/Service/Exchange
    Server/Properties/Advanced setup tabs and set the "Use network security
    during logon" to both the "on" and "off" values and it makes no
    difference - I am still required to re-enter my DIGITAL2 password to
    start Outlook.

910.1Logon to Domain even though it will fail.FLASK2::SYSTEMNigel Bridport @REOThu Feb 27 1997 13:2713
	When you login to your home PC, do you enter the DIGITAL2 domain
	or simply cancel the login option when prompted.

	I think that if you try to login to Digital2 at home, even though
	you won't be able to, you will access the password list file stored
	for your profile on your home machine and hence when you start your
	DUN/Exchange sessions I bet that your passwords are present.

	If you don't login, I don't think that you gain access to the
	password list file.

    At home, when the Win95 login screen comes up, I enter my name and
    password (which happens to be the same as my DIGITAL2 credentials).

    I'm kind of following what you say here but I don't really understand
    the logic of your argument. I think you are right that my real
    DIGITAL2 password is now available because the DUN doesn't request it
    from me - it is pre-supplied within the DUN Connect dialogue box. So if
    DUN knows it, why does Outlook either (a) need it again .AND. (b) force
    me to type it in.

910.3It's a win-95 problem.HYDRA::catherine.crl.dec.com::ALDENKen AldenThu Feb 27 1997 23:581
It only will happen on Win-95. It doesn't happen on NT.

    Ken,
    You sound pretty confident. So what exactly is the problem caused by?

910.5I can't quite nail it down yet.HYDRA::catherine.crl.dec.com::ALDENKen AldenWed Mar 05 1997 00:1511
Unsure. It has something to do with the net logon services state in the
Win-95 Netbios layer. NT seems to keep the state properly set, while
Win-95 only generates a token to be used for file/print services. It
doesn't know about any other "domain" services for which it could keep
this token. Thus, it thinks it needs to log on again. It really sucks
because you need to type your domain password in for every "service"
you have defined as active in your mapi services list. This includes
mounting shares on some file server that otherwise never needs your
password, but via exchange/outlook does.

     I to am having this problem, but it is on a Windows NT V4.0.

     This problem started after I installed MS Internet Explorer, the
    problem continued even after I installed the update version 3.02
