895.0. "Exchange to MS-Mail via X.400" by GIDDAY::JOYCE (Andy Joyce - Digital CSC Sydney) Thu Feb 20 1997 09:03

    Hi folks,

    	This started off in the MS-MailDriver conference (see below)
    	but I think it is now more relevant to Exchange or MAILbus 400.
    	My question is... is there any way that the Exchange X.400
    	connector can convert the Exchange version of OLE to the MS-Mail
    	version of OLE ? You'll see why I need to know this if you read on...

    	I'll post a similar question in the MAILbus 400 conference.

    Thanks,
    Andy

Note 400.0 Maildriver compatability with Exchange 2 replies

    Hi,

    Customer has the following set-up;

    MailDriver 1.0E
    ->	MailWorks for VMS V1.3A-3
    	->	Message Router V3.3A
    		->	XMR V1.2
    			->	MAILbus 400 V2.0
    				->	MS Exchange V4.0

    When they set messages that include embedded Word docs from
    Exchange to MailDriver they find that some "corruption" occurs
    i.e. the attachments are all moved to the top.

    My guess is there is some incompatability between the format of
    messages in MailDriver (or Ms-Mail) and Exchange. A note in the
    Exchange server training documentation leads me to believe that
    they use different versions of OLE and, if you were using "real"
    MS-Mail via the Exchange MS Mail Connector, it is configurable
    to "downgrade" the messages so that MS-Mail can read them. As this
    customer is using the Exchange X.400 connector they don't have that
    option.

    Has anyone seen anything like this before or got any ideas how to fix
    it?

    Thanks,

    Andy

    As I recall (and I admit my memory of these issues is fading), this is
    how the Microsoft Mail client processes attachments and is not related
    to the driver. If you have a Microsoft Mail Post Office you could
    verify this.

    Cindy,

    	I think you are right - the presence of a "MS-Mail 3.x
    	Compatability" flag on the Exchange MS-Mail Connector is
    	a fairly convincing argument! I'll try to set up MS-Mail
    	here in the CSC to prove it (but it could take a few days as
    	I'm not very familiar with MS-Mail).

    	In the meantime, I might just ask over in the MAILbus 400
    	and Exchange conferences if anyone has any ideas how we can
    	work around this problem (as I assume we can't change the MS-Mail
    	Client to understand the later version of OLE).

    Thanks,
