893.0. "auto forward : how to preserve the From field?" by GIDDAY::STRAUSS (talking through my binoculars) Thu Feb 20 1997 04:29

Mail addressed to my Exchange account is automatically forwarded to
VMS mail. When it arrives on VMS, the "From" field contains
_my_ name from the Exchange server, not the name of the
person who originally sent the message.

In the example below (names changed to protect the innocent :-)
someone called Foo Bar sent mail to my Exchange server.
When it's forwarded to VMS, the From field contains
SMTP%"STRAUSS@mail.dec.com", not Foo Bar as I'd like (and expect)

Is there a way to set up forwarding to preserve the original
sender's name?

Thanks in advance

	leon (Exchange newbie)

893.1You want Redirection, not auto-forwardZUR01::ASHGGrahame Ash @RLEThu Feb 20 1997 11:2711
Sorry I can't answer your question, but this might lead to a solution.

Auto-forward is working correctly i.e. it works automatically in exactly the
same way as a manual auto-forward from your Exchange account would have done.

What you really want is Redirection, where your Exchange address on the
original message is replaced by your VMSmail address. One way of achieving
this used to be by getting MTS to route the messages to where you want them -
I don't know what the CCS mechanism for Exchange is.

Well...if CCS weren't so "arrogant" they would implement "Custom Recepients"
and all mail sent to the Exchange "account" (which doesn't exist) would be
"redirected" to your account of choice.

I've ask for this to be implemented for myself and the response is that they
(CCS) doesn't want to "support" this feature of Exchange. So, I implemented
my own "Exchange Server", "connected" via an IMC to the rest of DIGITAL.

893.4try Deliver on the OpenVMS systemVIVIAN::RANCEhttp://vivian.hhl.dec.com/rance/Sun Feb 23 1997 19:2811
    I forward mail from VIVIAN::RANCE to my exchange account using the
    OpenVMS freeware tool Deliver. You need to have privileges on the
    OpenVMS system to do this correctly but if you have privs then the
    mail headers appear as

	To:	 Exchange account
    	From:    original sender
	Subject: original subject ! Sent to VIVIAN::RANCE

With Exchange 5.0 (or 4.5, as you want to call it), in the "Edit Rule" sheet (from Inbox Assistant) you can
specify which kind of forwarding you want. If you select "Leave message intact" the original From field is
preserved.

893.8Oh to forward properly!INDYX::ramRam Rao, PBPGINFWMYTue Mar 18 1997 00:318
As another person who forwards their Exchange mail off to another (Unix)
system, I too long for the ability to preserve the From field in the
forwarding process. Does CCS have any plans to move to Exchange V5.0?
If so when?

Thanks,

Ram

    Do I have to have my Exchange up and running in order for its
    Auto-forward feature to forward mail to my VMS account?

    Thanks,

    by "my Exchange" I presume you mean your Exchange client?

    Then the answer is no. Auto-forward is a server function. You don't
    need to be connected.
