891.0. "Access mail from home Mac? How?" by MPGS::KANN () Wed Feb 19 1997 23:05

	I am a new user of Microsoft exchange. I would like to be able
	to access my exchange mail from home. I have a Mac at home.

	Is there a way to do this?

	If yes where do I get the required software? etc...

	Thanks,
		Jim Kann

    There is a Macintosh native Microsoft Exchange client available. However,
    it will never be supported internally. It isn't a great piece of code...
    so good luck if you want to try it. (I don't have the kit lying around...
    it was available from their ftp site at one point.)

    In the future, Exchange will have a Web based client (all you'll need
    is a browser like IE or Navigator), IMAP4 support and POP3 support
    (brian-dead mail pull)... so there will be alternatives.

    No matter what... you'll need TCP/IP access to DIGITAL via PPP. (If
    you don't already.) System 7.6 has a decent PPP stack.

    Continue this thread in the Macintosh notes file if you need more help.

Yes, as .1 explains, there is an Exchange Client for Macintosh
which I've been using successfully here at work. You can get
the latest version from the Microsoft FTP site (FTP.MICROSOFT.COM).
The Mac client was included as part of the Service Pack 2 and
Service Pack 3 Exchange Server releases.

Theoretically, this client should work fine dialing in through
PPP, but some Mac users--including me--have had trouble getting the
Exchange client to connect to the Exchange Server over the dialup
line.

Specifically, we're getting a "Not enough system resources" message
when we try to connect. It does work for some folks, though,
so it's still a mystery right now.

See Note #908.* in the HUMANE::MACINTOSH conference for more
information or if you can help us troubleshoot the problem.

Are there any Exchange Server folks out there who might have some
clues what this "not enough resources" means?

891.3I am another frustrated userAZUR::DESOZAJean-Pierre, DTN 828-5559Fri Feb 21 1997 18:586
I have logged a call which, to date, has never been answered about this problem.
A wild guess of mine is that this problem Owis related to the names service:
Open Transport (ie TCP/IP on MacOS) does not support WINS, this is explicitly
stated in the relase notes.
My system has a 200 Mhz CPU, 48 MBytes physical RAM and 500 Mbytes free disk
space.I can hardly understand that I am short of any resource ...

I am very happy to inform the Mac users that I have been able to start the
Exchange Client tonight.
The solution which was reported in the Apple Notesfile indicates that the
native network protocol, Appletalk, must be activated although only TCP/IP
seems to be used.
891.5Resource Problem WorkaroundORION::LAQUERREPeter LaQuerreSat Mar 01 1997 19:358

    Just for the record, I found a workaround for the resource problem when
    dialing in with the Exchange Client for Mac over a PPP line.

    The trick is to turn on AppleTalk. For more info, see Note 908 in
    the HUMANE::MACINTOSH conference.
