886.0. "Strange problem - blank "from" field..." by SUBSYS::alcor.shr.dec.com::smith (Apps Engineer) Tue Feb 18 1997 18:12

Hi,

	I'm having a rather perplexing problem with Exchange...
From the main window of exchange the "from" field lists who a message
is from (or their personal message!), however, when I open the
message for reading, the from field is usually not readable. I've
checked all the normal things (font/background color, etc) and
they're not responsible as far as I can tell since some messages do
display this info... If I use the properties button it lists the
information, but it won't display in the standard window...
	It would appear to be related to one of the mail-routers
configuration since even when I send mail from my exchange account to
my own exchange account the from field is blank... I used to be on
the MOREXC2 server but was apparently migrated (nobody told me, but
my configuration now points) to SHREXC1...
	The only way I seem to get the from field to appear normally
is if someone on our VMS cluster sends mail to my VMSmail account (I
have it forwarded to "smtp%""SmithJos@mail.dec.com"""). Otherwise the
field always appears blank in the READ window of exchange...

Any ideas???

Thanks,
Joe

886.1Blank or garbage?DV780::SHAWSFri Feb 28 1997 01:353
    Not readable as in garbage or as in not there at all?

886.2ME TOO!!!!MSDOA::SCRIVENTue Mar 04 1997 23:2110
    I have the same problem as the base note.... Mine is "blank" and can
    only be seen if you double-click. I too went from MROEXC to ALFEXC.

    I just assumed they figured I didn't need to know in the read screen.
    If there's a way to fix it, I'd sure like to know too.

    Thanks...

886.3Stranger & Stranger...SUBSYS::alcor.shr.dec.com::smithApps EngineerWed Mar 05 1997 21:1518
Not readable as in blank...
	Strange part is, from my notebook (running `95) They appear
just fine... From my workstation (running Alpha NT 4.0 SP1) the
field appears blank...
	The version of Exchange on my 4.0 NT system is: 4.0.993.0
Unfortunatly my notebook is not here so I don't know exactly what
version of Exchange it's running...
	Our site support folks thought it was related to the headers
not being formatted properly, but the fact that my notebook can see
the headers leads me to believe it's related to the particular
version/installation of Exchange... It's just sort of funny that it
all happened when I moved from a "standalone" node to being part of
the Storage Domain, and about the same time, I was moved from MROEXC2
to SHREXC1....

	Thanks for any ideas,

Joe
886.4Same version on my notebook...SUBSYS::alcor.shr.dec.com::smithApps EngineerFri Mar 07 1997 19:028
	OK, I've got my notebook with me and it is running Exchange
V4.0.993.0 also... I guess it would seem to be specific to my
installation, but what should I look for???

Thanks,

Joe
886.5Differences between NT and 95FLASK2::SYSTEMNigel Bridport @REOMon Mar 10 1997 10:519
	Probably due to differences between the NT and 95 versions. I have
	previously seen problems with the header information on the NT client
	where the FROM window is not high enough. I think this problem may
	have been introduced in one of the SPs.

	Can you try to install the client that comes with V4.0 ?

Nige.
886.6I'll try it...SUBSYS::alcor.shr.dec.com::smithApps EngineerMon Mar 10 1997 19:325
	I'll check with my tech. suppt. folks to see if they're
willing to let me do that... Which version of exchange is newer?

Thanks again,
Joe

FWIW, I have the exact same problem using the Exchange 5.0 client on
NT 4.0 Alpha. I don't have the problem when using Outlook (on NT
Intel) to view the same message... Haven't tried the Exchange client
on Intel.
Not a big deal, but if anybody has a solution, I'm interested.

Thanks
	Vincent

	Still the same old problem here. Nobody in my support org.
has shown any interest in resolving this...

Oh well, maybe if enough of us see this...

Thanks,
Joe
