254.0. "BRS is alive." by STAR::SPEAKE (A light-year is NOT a measure of time.) Tue Apr 22 1997 03:22

Hello,

I am the OpenVMS Disaster Tolerant Product Manager.

Digital's Business Recovery Server (BRS) is my responsibility, and it is
virtually my only product responsibility.

I am happy to report that BRS is still a viable product and has a future.

We are porting the Operations Management Station (OMS) to Alpha. I will
post the details of the roll-out here soon.

Recently, with Shaun McCaughan's valuable assistance, I made a couple of
presentations to the OpenVMS organization. They now believe that BRS
is something that they want to invest in.

It will take some time to repair the decay that resulted from neglect over the
last couple of years. There are not many resources available for the rest of
the fiscal year, but there are enough to get the OMS port done.

The planning process for next FY is just getting started so it would be
premature to discuss it in any detail here and now. However, the responses I
received from my presentations were enthusiastic, which bodes well for the
planning/budget process.

Are the slides available to the wider audience?

Hmm... Not really. The slides were generally not technical. They were about
the market space, some recent sales figures, and my request for resources
in the upcoming FY. Most of this for internal (internal to OpenVMS, that is)
use only.

However, I recognize that some of the material may be useful. I realixe
that you haven't been provided with a lot of presentation material. I will try
to pull out some slides that may be useful and make them available.

I will also work on making some more general information available but my
resources are limited right now. We (my marketing person and I) have been
working to make sure there is a product to write about. With that solved,
we will be putting a little more effort on getting some colateral out to
the field.

    Tom,
Will there be a formal support plan created? I ask because, it has
always been rather unclear. The Colorado CSC is where the handfull of
Americas Zone support calls have been logged. We broe the product down
by component such that if it's a cluster issue the call is routed to
the cluster support folks, if it's a PCM issue then it goes to the
team that handles PCM, etc. The problem has always been with the OMS
software. Due to the infrequency of the support calls it's just not
possible to have a lot of people trained in it or for those people
    to stay current on it.

I'm very interested to hear your thoughts on this.

    Regards,
       Dan
