1382.0. "TCPIP please ?" by COMICS::WBROWN (The rusty nail that holds the anger in...) Mon Oct 18 1993 11:48

    Hi all

Well its been a while since I wrote in this conference... I bought a PC
to run unix !! but now I am thinking why don't I set up a network at
    home using TCP/IP ??

Therefore I am looking for the latest greatest TCP/IP suite (KA9Q or
whatever) for the atari. I read various notes here and tried accessing
    PRNSYS::USER1:[LOMICKAJ]NET*.* but without success.

Please can someone give me a pointer to where I can get the required
S/W. Any success stories are always nice to read too !!

    Many thanks

The KA9Q stuff is now on PRNSYS::DUA2:[LOMICKAJ.HOBBY.ST]

Directory PRNSYS$DUA2:[LOMICKAJ.HOBBY.ST]

NET.DIR;1 10 10-AUG-1989 17:16:51.05 (RWE,RWE,RWE,RE)
NET.DOC;1 587 20-DEC-1989 11:32:44.40 (RWED,RWED,RWE,RE)
NET33_ST.ARC;1 305 21-DEC-1988 17:00:09.00 (RWED,RWED,RWE,RE)
NETBIN.ZOO;1 223 21-DEC-1989 11:06:33.21 (RWED,RWED,RWE,RE)
NETSRC.ZOO;1 999 20-NOV-1989 17:17:44.68 (RWED,RWED,RWE,RE)

I;m not sure exactly what version anything is, but I know that NET.DOC
is the documentation, and NETBIN.ZOO is executable code that works. I
once had this running between my Stacy and a Microvax running
Ultrix/SLIP. I know it was real hard on the Ultrix end to make it all
work. I wrote it up in this conference somewhere.

There may be newer code available somewhere.

Nowdays I don't bother trying to network the Atari's. My Macintosh is
on DECnet, IP, and does LAT and Infoserver protocols, and does so
transparently and very easily. My PC is on DECnet. KA9Q hogs the
whole machine, so that you might as well just use KERMIT.

1382.3at last... but how ???COMICS::WBROWNThe rusty nail that holds the anger in...Wed Mar 15 1995 13:3120
well I finally want to set this up now that the two machines are in
    some sort of proximity.

I hav an st and a pc and the ka9q package for both of them.

what I want to do is have them talk tcp over the serial ports

    ie ftp telnet mail etc.

I'm not too sure of the correct content of the rc.net or was it net.rc
file (for serial port stuff) on either the st or the equiv file
    needed on the pc.

If anyone has done this sort of connection or can point me at abc
documentation it would be a great help because I don't have too much
time for a suck and see approach.

    thanks

To talk tcp/ip over serial ports you need to run slip or ppp, now I
personally don't know if this needs a slipp/ppp server or not, but both
sides have to be clipp or ppp capable. ka9q should enable this.

erm... thanks for the response 8-)... but what does it mean.
I understand slip (sort of) but what do I need in the net.rc file
and its pc equivalent to talk over the serial port.

I think that in the atari net.rc file its something like

    attach asy AUX: mumble..mumble...mumble

somewhere I dug out an example, but is it the same on the pc end
ie is AUX: the serial port or is it COMn: ??

Is there an easy gentle here_you_are_you_fool_read_this_and_don't
_bother_me_again guide that'll tell me what to do ?? Where ??

    Thanks

All I know about slip/ppp is that slip means serial inline protocol and
ppp is point to point protocol. I don't really know how to set it up
other than how I've set ka9q up for demon internet services.

I would suggest that you look in ljsrv2::internet_tools and if there is
nothing there ask about it in there.

What I can remember of setting up ka9q for demon was that there is a
setup option in the menu system, but I don't know if that is demon's
    own menu or ka9q's menu.

Also check the demon notes conf, I'll check the pointer and post the
address of the conf in a coupl of moments

1382.8NOS vs. KA9QMUNSBE::BFALKENSTEINThu Mar 16 1995 13:4011

from my monitoring of the German MausNet, where there also was a
discussion ongoing about TCP/IP on the Atari, there seems to be
a SW-package called "NOS", which is simplier as KA9Q and more
easy to install. I don't have pointers where to find it, but at
least you could try a "dir *nos*.*" one one of the ftp-servers
    with Atari-SW.

thanks everyone for your help... it does seem that info is a bit in
short supply but I'm going to try it and see if I can get anywhere.
If I have any good news I'll try and post it. Other than that if anyone
else wants to chip in then...
    the more the merrier !!!
