1361.0. "Megafile 30 problem" by UTROP1::BOUWMANS_J () Fri May 14 1993 14:22

    Hi,

    I'm having a problem with my harddisk (Megafile 30). Now and then,
    when I switch it on, nothing happens (no lights). After knocking gently
    on the unit, it suddenly starts working. After that, during the first few
    minutes, it sometimes switches off again. After 5 minutes, the
    situation is normal and I can work 'forever' without problems.

    Any ideas?

    John.

1361.1Hopefully just a bad connectionMSBCS::WALLACE_RFri May 14 1993 17:5727
Sounds like a bad connection either on the powersupply or in the power supply
cable to the drive.

Open up the drive case (not hard to do, just keep in mind that there is a pair
of wires connecting the light on the box to the circuit board on the drive
mechanism). Check that the power cable is securly plugged into the drive
mechanism (about 3/4" x 1/8" white connector with four wires going to the
power supply). Then check over the power supply (board near the back of the
box, which is connected to the power switch and probably has a fuse on it),
look for loose connections bad solder joints etc...

If you can find the problem, it should be easy to fix (resolder, tighten
connector, etc..). But it is possible that the problem is a crack in the etch,
in which case it could be difficult to find.

I assume you already checked to insure that the power cord is securely plugged
in on both ends. You may also want to wiggle the power switch to insure it is
not wore or broke internaly (not likly but possible).

If you can't find anything wrong, then post another note and maybe someone in
your area with a bit of technical experience can take a look at it (my humble
appologies if you have technical experience, I just guessed by the question
that you don't).

  Good luck,

	Ray
