    I have two questions about Modems:
    
    - has anyone ever tried a 14,400 bps Modem with the Atari? I want to
      buy one, but also want to be sure it works. I heard rumours that
      the Atari or his Operating System won't support 14,400 bps Modems.
    
    - I can't get the MNP5-option of my 2400 bps Modem to work with my 
      Atari. I have a Mega STE 4 with TOS 2.05 and program my Modem
      according to the manual in the following way:
    
                         AT\N3
                         AT%C1
                         AT\V1
    
      with the Baud-Rate of the RS232 set to 9600 and XON/XOFF and 
      RTS/CTS enabled. The Modem reports "OK", but connecting a BBS
      with a known MNP5-Modem stops directly after the "CONNECT 2400"
     
      There are two patch-programs for the RS232-port, that I thought
      might solve the problem:
    
      SERPTCH2.PRG: supposed to fix a parity-problem of the serial port.
                    Don't see a difference, but does not harm any
                    operation, so I have it in the Auto-folder
    
      RS232ENC.PRG: supposed to fix a problem with Highspeed and MNP5.
                    With this program I can't access the Modem anymore.
    
    
    Any ideas?

	I use a HST USRobotics 14.4K modem with my STe, no problems DL'ing at 1700cps. (Thats around 14,000 baud). Uploading is less, around 1500cps, but I use not patches what-so-ever, and the flash 1.6 terminal program with zmodem21.ttp. There are programs like turbocts.prg that correct rts/cts but I haven't needed to run them yet. If the term program you use doesn't suport an rts/cts switch, then you might want to run one of the programs. KR

	I'm not sure that a 8 Mhz ST will be able to talk to a modem at a greater baud rate than 19.2K, so you may not be able to get the best out of a really fast modem. With a Mega STE, isn't that 16 Mhz?, in which case it might be possible to get 32.4K. Re the MNP 5, I doubt that that's anything to do with the ST itself (I run a 2400 modem with MNP 5 with no problems) but more the interactions with the other modem. Can you connect correctly without the MNP 5 enabled? How about with MNP 4 (IIRC, 5=Compression, 4=Reliable connection). With TOS 2.05, I don't know what patches are needed but normally they're there to make the RTS/CTS flow-control work correctly, so while you're testing this, try without any patches and see if that helps?

	thanks for the info, sounds like good news. I'll better try to borrow a friend's 14.4K modem to try it out. Maybe you run on TOS 2.06 that you do not need to patch the RS232. I heard they fixed the problems in that version? Any solution for the MNP5-problem? Bernd

	Ups, collision with -2. Yes, I have a perfect connection without MNP5. How do you set your modem? The manual said that the commands I typed in would enable the modem to automatically adjust to the other side and switch off MNP if needed. Bernd

	Sorry, I forgot to get the book today but the %C1 is familiar. I normally set mine such that it always connects at a fixed speed of 2400 (It's the called modem that should switch it's speed) with both MNP 4 and MNP 5 enabled. They're separate settings for me and I suspect that they're both needed for MNP 5. Are you sure that the place you're connecting to has MNP 5, as when I started up I spent a long time trying to connect to a BBS where the modems would negotiate a connection and report a good (RELIABLE COMMPRESSED with my modem's msgs) link which would very quickly terminate. As I later found, the BBS's modem _didn't_ have MNP 5 but somehow persuaded my modem that it did! Is there anywhere else you could try that has MNP 5 as it could be just a modem incompatability?
