1288.0. "ftp mailer: question about file formats/convers.." by BERN01::RUGGIERO (Markus from Switzerland) Wed May 27 1992 09:20

    Friends,

I need help with FTP. I know how to use the ftp mailer and get files
but I am confused about all the formats. Please advise:

The files that I am interested in have an extension of .zip. I
understand that this is Lempel-Ziv compression. What exactly do I have
to specify to get such files from the ftp mailer and what do I have to
do to convert them into something usable (for those who want to know
more: it listings and programs from the German magazine c't that can be
found on ftp.uni-regensburg.de). I have access to a VMS and an Ultrix
    account.

    Thanks for any info

In your message to the ftpmail server, include the lines

binary
uuencode

This will tell the server that the files you are getting are binary
and they should be sent to you in a uuencoded format. Then on your
system extract the parts from mail put them together, and uudecode them.
I usually download the resulting binary file to my st at this point.
Now it looks like you'll need some way to un zip them. That format
isn't to popular on the ST, but there is a zip program on atari archive
called stzip11.zoo. Obiously to use this you'll need the zoo archiver.

hope this helps

ps - Here is an example of a message being sent to the ftpmail server
at decwrl to get the zip program. Obviously replace the instances of
my address with yours, and the machine to connect to. You might also
need to change the chdir line, as that's the directory the people at
atari archive put things in most places put them in /pub.

I just put stzip11.zoo in oldtmr::$1$dua8:[wallace.public.st]

uud.arc is there as well (for uudecoding).

I sent a "help" message to both the atari archive at BART and to
TWITTERPATER and also received neither an acknowledgement nor error.

Maybe these servers should be renamed to "black hole1" and "black hole2"! :-)
1288.5Don, I have access to a local Internet site. Want me to see if I can FTP to BART??SEARS::G_FELDMANJerry Feldman DTN 381-0122 ZKO2-1/Q14Thu Aug 27 1992 13:330

Effective immediately, the submission address for comp.sources.atari.st is

atari-sources@hyperion.com

and the submission address for comp.binaries.atari.st is

atari-binaries@hyperion.com

The archive server will remain on twitterpater a little while longer, but
it will be moving to hyperion.com shortly as well. I will post another
note when that's about to happen.

Incidentally, for those wondering why both groups are dry, it's not because
I've gotten slow again; my queues have been empty for a while, and no new
submissions have been coming in.
