1273.0. "ATARI & Unix ?????" by FUTURS::LLOYDN () Mon Mar 30 1992 08:01

    Hi All,

    A little while ago I spoke to ATARI in the UK about TT's, and their
    availability. Well ATARI could give delivery dates, but the chap I
    spoke to started to rattle of about an ATARI UNIX thingy, running on
    a TT with 300mb Hard Disk 19" monochrome monitor. At the time I didn't
    payt any attention as he wasn't givening me the low down on what I was
    asking for.

    But now that TT's are becoming available I was wondering if any has
    heard seen used one of these UNIX box's. And if anyone out their
    willing to give a run down. Or is this more vapour ware ???

    Mighty Thanks

    Nick

1273.1There was some discussion about it on GENIEPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaWed Apr 01 1992 15:166
I've read the TT Unix thread on GEnie - and there are people actually
running it. I'm somewhat interested myself, since I have the hardware
for it now. This seems to have all the flavor of the famous CDROM
drive. Sort of like - some people have it, but nobody can get it. The
code is, however, real. It includes X/Motif. I have never actually
seen it run.

    Cheers Jeff,

    Good old ATARI aye !!!

1273.3It's realPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaWed Apr 08 1992 20:363
I have actually SEEN the Atari Unix - I even logged into it and played
for a few minutes. It require a TT with 14MB of RAM and a 270MB hard
drive. It includes the GNU compiler tools, and X windows, and Motif.
1273.4UNIX & TOS/MultiTOSFUTURS::LLOYDNTue Apr 28 1992 14:539

    Jeff,

    Do you know whether a TT running UNIX can run TOS/MultiTOS along side.
    If not any reasons why ??

    Nick
1273.5Both, but not at the same time.PRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaThu Apr 30 1992 16:355
The same computer can run both operating systems, but not both at the
same time. Both operating systems take over the hardware completely.

When we walked up to the machine, it was running TOS. Then we ran a
"boot" program that asked if we wanted TOS or Unix, and it came up Unix.
1273.6It's hereFUTURS::LLOYDNMon May 18 1992 07:3140

    I've just had a chat with Atari UK, and they are selling
    a developers TT UNIX systems. These have the following
    hardware spec. being a typical noter I've left the Atari
    letter at home so I'll post the software spec. tomorrow.

    A TT UNIX box is :

    A TT030, with 16mb memory,
             340mb Harddisk,  300mb for unix, 40mb for TOS V?
             19" Monochrome monitor.

    Now the price for this fully installed with the UNIX operating system
    is #2999.99. Now I've looked at just about every different combination
    of different PC/UNIX's and for the same system the Atari rises above
    all the others in price. I don't know about preformance, but then if
    you only want it for home use, if it's not a megamip machine who cares
    at that price.

    At the moment it's only available from Atari, but will be released any
    day now. The developers is only monochrome, but a colour version will
    be ready ??? once general release has come about. Price variances
    will also occur on release ???.

    At whats even better you don't have to chuck out all that Atari
    software, as the thing will run in TOS or UNIX. WOW.

    Good Bye from a desparetly saving but getting married in two weeks
    Atarian.

    Nick

    At last Atari will be in the running.

    ps.

    Also if you already have a TT then you can buy an upgrade kit, but I'll
    post all these details tomorrow.
1273.7ASV what is itFUTURS::LLOYDNTue May 19 1992 07:45113

    After making a enormous amount of phone calls and hassling people
    at Atari I managed to get to talk with their one and only one UNIX
    bod in the UK. Who I will say was very helpful (same their weren't
    more) he sent the information below, and said that the UNIX system
    is only available from Atari until general release in the summer ?

    I've copied the below without premission and no doubt included a
    multitude of spelling mistakes. And all the usual disclaimers apply.

    The Atari System V (ASV) developers kit conatains a rich set of
    developers tools conforming to a wide range of industry standards. The
    foundation is AT&Ts UNIX System V release 4.0 for the Motorola 68030/40
    series of processors. The X Window System standard graphical user
    interfaceis used offering the developer the ability to work with
    clients running on other machines or to share clients with others on a
    network.

    To provide the most intuitive interface available and to be consistent
    with industry standards, Atari has adopted OSF/Motif. The development
    tool XFaceMaker enables designers of ASV applications to quickly create
    OSF/Motif conformant application frontends. The desinger can paint an
    application screen from a palete of OSF/Motif objects such as label,
    push buttons, scroll bars and message boxes and then see how it looks
    and feels within XfaceMaker.

    In addition to the rich set of development tools standard with System
    V, the efficient GNU C and C++ compliers and the GNU debugger, are all
    includecd in the ASV Developers Kit. The C compiler is fully compatible
    with the System V ELF object format anf wit the ANSI C issue 5
    extensions.

    The Atari Style Guide descrobing OSF/Motif style is part of the
    developers kit. By following the standards set in this guide,
    developers are assured of creating applications with the interface
    consistent with other ASV applications.

    Developers using the ASV kit are assured of maintaining compatability,
    portability and interoperability with other workstation vendors
    conforming to open systems architecture and technical workstation
    industry standards, such as POSIX, X/OPEN XPG3, FIPS, NFS, X Window
    System and Motif.

    The TT030 ASV developers workstation comes with 18mb of RAM, a 340mb
    Hard Disk and a TTM195 monitor. Connectivity with workstation networks
    is simple with the addition of an Atari VME/Ethernet Card.
