1252.0. "T16 Upgrade Problems." by SCAACT::BROWNL () Tue Mar 03 1992 17:59

    Hi Everyone....

    I am looking for any guru type who can tell me what to do......

    In my note 1243 I mentioned I was getting my MEGA 2 upgraded. I
    had an additional 2 Meg Ram (DRAM), and a T16 "Add-speed" (By Fast
    Technologies......

    Now most of the things I have on my HARDDISK (MEgafile 30) won't
    run! They act like they are executing and then they get 2 or 3 bombs
    and ALWAYS say "Bus Error".

    They installed a switch to turn off the caching, and when turned off,
    some of my telecommunications software works, and some games will work
    for a little while before they get the same BUS error.

    What should I do? Anything I execute from my floppy drive works, so I
    assume that the additional speed is too much for the Hard disk drive.

    Is there some software I can use to slow down the hard disk access
    (like was done in the early IBM PC days.....???? Has anyone fought
    this battle? )

    Or am I now stuck with a non-functioning Atari because I wanted to
    speed it up?

    ANY suggestions would be appreciated...

    Thanks (sigh)

1252.1Change the buffersYNGSTR::WALLACEWed Mar 04 1992 14:565
I'm not sure but it sounds more like you need the buffers in your mega
upgraded. This is a known problem with add ons in the mega, they load down the
bus to much for the buffers ('244's?) to handle.

1252.2Replace the DriverVNABRW::KRONSTEINERThu Mar 05 1992 10:1310
    Lets assume the ST-memory is ok. there is a good chance that the
    bus-drivers (buffers latches) work at their limit.
    Start to replace the 74ls373 with (74f373, or 74al(s)373, or 74hct373)
    next do the same with the 74ls244.
    I changed to F- type TTL-chips and was able to reduce the Waitstates
    for the rom-access on my accelerator-board. ( got bombs with the LS)
    With HCT-type chips I got bombs on an intermittend base.
    Have no experience with AL or ALS chips but they should work also.
