After reading several years worth of notes on the subject of XMODEM and
LAT's in this conference, I still haven't been able to figure out if
it's possible to successfully use XMODEM (or YMODEM or ZMODEM) when
communicating through a LAT to a VAX.

When I try to do it, the first 16 blocks transfer OK but then there's a
    problem with the 17th block.

The consistency of this - as pointed out by Jeff Lomicka years ago in
another note - suggests a problem with XON/XOFF handling in the LAT.

So I've tried SET PORT FLOW DISABLE at the LAT prompt, followed also by
SET TERM/NOTTSYNC/NOHOSTSYNC at the DCL pormpt, but all to no avail. I
still get hung up on the 17th block.

Has anybody ever succeeded in using XMODEM across a LAT? And does TSN
and a dial in line make it worse?

Thanks if you know the answer.

I use ZMODEM over a LAT dialup line (to VMS systems) quite regularly.
ZMODEM works first time, every time, and is MUCH faster than KERMIT.
It also lacks the pad-to-the-end-of-the-block "feature" of XMODEM that
results in a need to strip the ######## pad characters off afterwards.

This sounds familiar. As I remember it, I had to interrupt the LAT
session and SET SESSION PASSALL in order to get the LAT out of the way.
(The LAT won't do ANY flow control for you when this is set -- you
might be able to get things to work with SET SESSION PASSTHRU, but I'm
doubtful.) Since I changed to ZMODEM, I haven't had to fool with it.

Yes and yes. TSN only passes 7-bit data. XMODEM requires 8-bit data.
Therefore, you CAN'T do XMODEM transfers over TSN connections.

I am not 100% sure, but if the program set your LTA terminal to
passall, the LAT post should be passall as well.

NOTE: this only works if you are only talking to 1 decserver. If you
jump through any back-back decservers as a gateway, it will not work.

1230.3A ZMODEM to copy?POWDML::STEILThu Jan 09 1992 19:284
Bill, do you have a working ZMODEM in your account that you'd be
    willing to let me copy?

I'll have to move my ZMODEM stuff (and VMS versions of other handy
utilities, like LHARC & ZOO) to a place from which they can be made
available to the masses. I'll send mail when I'm ready.
