1179.0. "ATonce PC emulator?" by BIRMVX::LANE (Engineerus Digitalis) Thu Sep 26 1991 09:05

    Hi all,
    	I planning to get the ATonce-plus pc/at emulator made by Vortex,
    and was wondering if anyone uses one or has experience of one, and can
    tell me anything about the compatibility with Dos software, and what
    the screen  displays are like.

    	Thanks

1179.1ATonce is okUFHIS::BFALKENSTEINThu Sep 26 1991 09:2311

    I have the old one (80286/8MHz) that works just fine. All software
    I tried out so far works good, even WINDOWS 3.0, only exception is
    software that needs a FPU 80287 like AutoCad. Screen display on a
    mono monitor is VGA with greyscales, I didn't try it out with color
    yet (for sure NOT VGA!). Speed measured with Norton is something
    with 7.x. Using TOS-partition "D" as DOS-partition "C" I also can
    boot DOS 4.01 from harddisk.

1179.2A couple more questions..BIRMVX::LANEEngineerus DigitalisThu Sep 26 1991 12:3611
    Hi Bernd,
    	Thanks for replying so quick. What is the screen refresh rate like?
    Is it comparable to a PC, i.e, is it only suitable for professional s/w
    or will games run on it ok? I really only want to run windows
    applications like wordperfect and dBase/Clipper, but if it can run
    Flight sim 4 it would be a bonus.

    Thanks

1179.3it's not bad for an emulationUFHIS::BFALKENSTEINFri Sep 27 1991 05:5017

    Well, I'm running Flight Sim II and that's ok for me. The screen
    refresh rate cannot be compared to a 33MHz '386, it's a 8MHz '286.
    Because there's no SW emulation anymore like in the old PC-ditto,
    but a real '286 processor on that board, the screen refresh rate
    also matches the one of a 8MHz AT. On a black and white monitor you
    really can work with ATonce and the VGA display. Windows applications
    is ok in black and white VGA. You may even have better results, because
    now you only can buy the ATonce+ with 16MHz. As far as I know the 8MHz
    version is not longer sold. If you got a STE there is even a better
    choice: they offer a 16MHz '386SX with 512kB own cache-buffer now. This
    board really speeds up! Costs about 800.- DM (~270.- pounds, ~470.- $).
    I bought the ATonce to avoid having two computers at home, and my wife
    has to work with DOS sometimes. She's perfectly happy with this, so
    it's good enough for me for the few things I do with DOS...
