1149.0. "Any info on the Atari SX212?" by SKIVT::HEARN (Time will tell...) Mon Jun 24 1991 23:40

    	Is it a waste of money to but an Atari Sx212 1200 baud
    	modem? "They" claim it's "Hayes" compatible, but does
    	that really mean compaitble? It's for $30.00 from
    	Damark - Worthwhile? or Waste of money - I'd like to
    	get a "cheap" Hayes compatible to use with Mini-BBS from
    	Lars-Erik in Norway. Would anyone know if the Atari
    	modem works with the AT command set (I think that's what's
    	really needed)?
    					All thoughts welcomed,

    						Tnx,

1149.1SX212 is Hayes compatible... sortaAIDEV::HUTCHINSONHutchWed Jun 26 1991 12:2510
Rich,

Not from first hand experience, but a friend had an Atari SX212 that he used
with Interlink ST and I'm sure he maintained his old login script files that
used the more common Hayes commands. Very few modems are 100% Hayes but no one
seems to miss the few commands that are missing/different it seems.

Then again, you can buy 2400 baud modems for less than $100 now. Shop around.

1149.2OK - we'll keep "looking"...SKIVT::HEARNTime will tell...Wed Jun 26 1991 13:206

    	Hutch,

    		Thanks for the words... I'll probable shop then.

1149.3Tiny (pocket size) modems at that pricePRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaWed Jun 26 1991 13:494
For $29.95+P&H you can get TINY 1200 baud modem from Damark.

Only warning is that it doesn't do Carrier Detect correctly, so although
it works fine with Whack and Uniterm, it doesn't work well with Aladin.
1149.4Use the HIGHEST possible baud rate!REGENT::LOMICKARoy LomickaThu Jun 27 1991 09:446
Please value your TIME just a little bit. ALL 1200 baud modems are a waste
of money. 2400 baud is pretty universal now, and not much more expensive than
the el cheapo 1200 baud. If you are calling DEC to work from home, you can
probably BORROW a modem on a long term basis. If you are calling commercial
services or long distance BBS's you'll save lots of money by using the highest
possible baud rate.
1149.5Do 'ppreciate the thoughtsSKIVT::HEARNTime will tell...Thu Jun 27 1991 13:3613

    	Jeff & Roy,

    		Thanks for the thoughts - I'm really wanting to be able
    	to "host" a BBS on my Atari (using Mini-BBS) and need to be
    	"Hayes Compatible" - whatever that means. It's the "free-bie"
    	BBS from Norway. I really don't want to get a modem and find out
    	it won't work. I guess I'll jsut keep looking for now - 'til
    	I get more info, or decide for some other reason to buy one. I
    	agree with the speed concerns though.

    							Tnx agn,

1149.6I bought a real HayesPOWDML::STEILFri Jun 28 1991 20:3113
    My solution to the "Hayes Compatible Problem" was to buy a real
    Hayes Smartmodem 2400.

    It was ridiculasly expensive ($400), but its extremely reliable. I
    haven't seen anything resembling } or other garbage for years.

    And of course, it's Hayes compatible.

    I felt silly having spent the $$ for about a year, now I just love the
    thing.

1149.7On the other hand...SKIVT::HEARNTime will tell...Mon Jul 01 1991 11:4213

    Gil,

    	I thought about doing that, until I realized my wife would not
    	be happy with another ~$400.00 modem (the 1st was the DF112 for
    	the PRO [~475.00 back in '86 - employee cost] :^)

    	I admit - I'm hoping for a "cheap way out"; I may not find one,
    	but I can look  :^)

    						Tnx for the thought tho',
