1078.0. "Good deal on Dennis Palumbo's fonts" by PRNSYS::LOMICKAJ (Jeffrey A. Lomicka) Thu Feb 21 1991 16:54

Dennis Palumbo, a designer/marketer of fonts for PagesStream and
Calmus, is offering a good deal on fonts to user groups that buy
them in bulk quantities. NaVAUS, the "Metro-West" Massachusetts
Atari user's group for which I am president, is going to make one
of these bulk purchases, and this is your opportunity to get in on
	the deal.

The deal is that if we order 11 or more disks, the prices are:

	Pagestream disks: $15.95 (List price $34.95, U.S.)
	Calamus disks: $11.95 (List price $29.95, U.S.)

I don't think "11" will be a hard number to reach, since I'm
getting 4 to start off, and we'd only have to come up with 7 more.
I intend to send in the order at 12:00 noon eastern time, on March
27th, the day after the March NaVAUS meeting. This gives you just
over a month to download his demos and decide. (NaVAUS memebers
will be able to get the demos at the February 26 meeting, and will
have to bring their order to the next meeting.) His products are
	as follows:

		"Font disk 1"
			Gallya Ornamented
			Kooper Black
			Plaebill
Screen font for 36-point "Helvetic" for better WYSIWYG
		"Font disk 2"
			Basketville
			Gallya
			Decorative borders
			Screen font for 36-point "Tyme"
		"Font disk 3"
			Helvetic Extra Light
			Casslon
Fractions (any fraction in a times or helvetica style)
			Screen font for 36-point "Colombia"
		"Font disk 4"
He says "Disk 4 is almist completed and will
consist of Garamond, Garmond Light, and probabally
Garamond Bold" This is interesting, because
"Garmond" is the official typeface of Digital
Equipment corporation. The envelope the letter
came in was addressed in Garamond, and looked
			quite nice.

There are available for either Calamus or PageStream.

I've downloaded all of his PageStream font demos from GENIE. They
	are available as:

	PRNSYS::USER2:[LOMICKAJ.HOBBY.ST]
		BORDERD.ARC
		BSKTVLED.ARC
		CASSLOND.ARC
		COLMB_36.ARC
		FRACTND.ARC
		GALLYAD.ARC
		GALYA_OD.ARC
		HELV_LGD.ARC
		KOOPERD.ARC
		PLAEBLD.ARC

It seems you dearc these into your font directory, update your
font list in the PageStream font manager, and then open/print the
.DOC files that come with them.

If you want to get in on this deal, send me mail indicating:
		- Font disk numbers you want
		- PageStream or Calamus format
		- Delivery option
			- Pick up in Maynard or at NaVAUS meeting (free)
			- U.S. Mail (I'll have to guess the cost. I'll
find out how much these weigh and
					get the rates)
			- UPS (My wife's business is a UPS stop, so I can
				do this too.)

I will reply with a total cost, which you will have to snailmail to:
		NaVAUS
		P.O. Box 456
		Maynard, MA 01754
Please arrange for payment to arrive before the March 27th cutoff.

If I get 22 disk orders, I'll send in the first 11 right off.

My only handy means of shipping this stuff internationally is UPS
next day air, which is AT LEAST $25/shipment. I'm afraid that
unless you get together with some friends to eat the shipping
cost, I'm going to say that this is deal is for U.S. only.

1078.1BTW, you own user group comes firstPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaThu Feb 21 1991 16:563
P.S., only use this method if your own user group isn't going to persue
this deal. I wouldn't want NASTUS members to order through NaVAUS, and
end up with NASTUS not meeting the 11 unit minimum.
1078.2Font deal closes oen week from todayPRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaTue Mar 19 1991 15:0420
Well, much to my surprise, NOBODY from DEC came forward (so far) to get
fonts from this deal. The deadline is NEXT TUESDAY. Perhaps:

	- Fear that PageStream V2 will make your font collection obsolete?
	(Dennis promises cheap updates.)

	- DECies don't do very much desktop publishing?

Come to think of it, there isn't much in this conference covering
PageStream, Calamus, or any of the other publishing tools, so I suspect
that there just isn't that much publishing going on here. I admit that
I'm in a bit of an unusual situation in that I do a LOT of PageStream
work on my ST, and so I immediately jumped on this font deal, thinking
there would be a long line of people wanting to get in on it.

As it stands, I have nine of the needed eleven. I should be able to
coerce a two more out of some NaVAUS members this Tuesday, and make the
11 font minimum. If you are interested, and you were procrastinating,
drop me a line now.
