970.0. "is TOS 1.4 difficult to get" by CURIUM::LEE () Fri Sep 21 1990 13:19

Since I did not have a hard drive back when TOS 1.4 was first out, I waited
Now since I am looking at hard drives I am/was trying to upgrade to TOS 1.4,
change the part SGS373 to 74AS373 and what else needed to make it work
properly, for the "last three months" with Bob Fitzpatrick of RF Microtech,
(he service/repairs Atari ST in N. Billerica, MA., here in US of A). The
story I got was that he could not get Atari to ship him the TOS 1.4 for my
MEGA ST2.

Now, is Atari is as screwed up as the reply 967.1 indicated and can not
even supply TOS to service folks. How difficult is it to copy ROMs?
I tried calling a mail order place. Even they were waiting for Atari to
ship TOS 1.4. The latest issue of CURRENT NOTES magazine I got this week
in the mail did not even carry any advertisement for TOS 1.4.

P.S.

Recently a neighbor of mine, currently a high school senior asked me what
home computer to get. Because of my experience with TOS 1.4 above and in
considering what & why he needed a home computer for, I had to turn him
away from Atari and go for possibly a "used MAC SE/30". There goes a $2500.
worth of sales. A teenager can get a decent paying summer job knowing how
to use a MAC and Pagemaker software.

p%$#@! off at Atari

970.1Maybe we'll have some at AtariFestBAGELS::FELDMANJerry Feldman DTN 227-3279Fri Sep 21 1990 14:0718
I should be talking to Bob Brodie at Atari in the next few days as well
as Betsy Piper from Tech Plus. I will try to find out why TOS 1.4 has
been difficult to get, or where you can get it. Hopefully, one or more
of the vendors at AtariFest '90 will have some.

There were some unnamed souls around who were selling TOS 1.4 EProms.
While I cannot advocate this approach because it does violate copyright
laws, based uppon Atari's previous performances with regard to Prom
availabilities, I would certainly suggenst that this may be a more
reliable way to get the proms.

With respect for recommending machines to others, unfortunately for
Atari, over the past few years, I have recommended over 2 dozen
computers to people including PCs, MACs, AppleII-GS, as well as Atari.
I rarely recommend Atari these days for students or for business
applications except for Music and Desktop publishing.

Down here, because they are usually sold out before they even get
to dealer stock, TOS 1.4 usually takes about 3-monthes to
        receive.

I have it in mine, but I also had the macine in for repair and
upgrade back in May and didn't get it back until August (no
problem cause I was traveling quite a bit during that time).

As for recommending machines, I base it on what the future owner
wants to do. So I recommend Atari, Amiga, Mac and PC. They are
all available from dealer stock down here - including Stes,
        Stacys, Megas, STfms, Portfoilos.
