969.0. "Amiga Ready?" by FRSBEE::POLLAN () Thu Sep 20 1990 22:01

     Could someone clear up how the ST could run Amiga software.

     Is it a PD software unit needed or hardware or what.

     Does the software run as well and how do the graghics look.\

    Thanx in advance.

	Hey, wasn't that the other way round? I never heard of any program
	that made the AtariST act like an Amiga but I know there is an
	Atari-Emulator for the Amiga. There was an article about it 2 or 3
	month ago in the German "STMagazin". They say it runs reasonably well.

969.2Yes it exists but....RDGENG::JYERKESSSLS ? It's elementary WatsonFri Sep 21 1990 13:178
    Hi,
    	I know that there is a program that does a bad job of emulating the
    Amiga workbench, this requires the blitter chip that can be found on
    STE's and MEGA's. The last time I heard of the program was about 4
    years ago, so whether or not it has been improved since then is up to
    question. Check PD library's for availability if your still interested.

969.3Small Amiga?EARRTH::POLLANMon Oct 01 1990 15:5514

     Hi,

     Thanx for the speedy replys on the subject.
      .1 is correct that the Amiga emulator for the Atari is what i first
      was talking about.
      I am searching for the Amiga on the Atari.
      It seems to me that the Amiga has much more support.
      The graphics on its programs seem better.
      Maybe we need Dave Small to do this in his spare time...

    Being the present owner of an Amiga and a past owner of an Atari, I
    wish anyone who tries to make an Amiga emulator the greatest of luck.
    The Amiga has numerous coprocessors that would almost have to be
    emulated through hardware. Besides, it would be almost impossible to
    make a single tasking machine emulate a multi-tasking one. The Atari
    wasn't built for it. Not to mention that Atari's raw speed and graphics
    power just couldn't compare with what the amiga does. At best a suped
    up atari could be fitted with a hardware board and possibly emulate a
    low end amiga. I believe one company tried to make an amiga emulator
    for the mac or something like that and they were going to use a
    dedicated 68000 to emulate each of the coprocessors. This is not meant
    as a flame against atari. I liked my atari. Emulating a multi-tasking,
    multi-processor machine just isn't easy to do.

969.5Multiprocessing has very little to do with hardwarePRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaTue Oct 02 1990 19:155
Actually, emulating the multi-tasking nature of the machine would be
trivial. It's the graphics hardware that would stop you. Multi-tasking
is just a small matter of software - the Amiga DOS will do that no mater
what 68000 you run it on. The coprocessor graphics and memory
management features of the amiga would require a hardware add-on.

    re:.5 hardware isn't needed, it could be done in software, but
    that would slow it down quite a bit. After all, there are software
    ibmpc emulators that emulate even the behavior of the com port
    chip.

    It's the classic question of how deeply do you need to emulate to
    get the level of compatibility needed. Then comes the question
    of how to make it fast enough to be reasonable on a 68000. The
    speed and compatibility issues are when the hardware solution starts
    looking a lot better. Then somebody offers to sell you a used
    system real cheap :-) poof goes the idea of spending a lot of time
    on a hack.
