940.0. "DOS, Seagate, & PC-Ditto..." by SKIVT::HEARN (Time will tell...) Fri Aug 17 1990 12:43

    	I've tried looking under PC-Ditto, DOS, Advant-Garde, etc and
    	have not been able to locate any ideas; so here's hoping some-
    	one may be able to help.

    	I've got a 1040STf with a Seagate 277N using a BMS-200 controller
    	(Berkely Microsystems). Using PC-Ditto, I'm trying to make the
    	1st partition DOS (so I can let my wife run the system for her
    	stuff). What happens is following the PC-Ditto directions, what
    	I wind up with is the actual DOS code on drive C (partition 0) and
    	the boot code (for DOS) on drive D (partition 1).

    	Would anyone have any ideas as to what I might be doing wrong? Any
    	thoughts as to 'what next'?

    							Tnx,

    							     Rich

940.1MS-DOS <> PC-DOSSKIVT::HEARNTime will tell...Wed Aug 22 1990 19:0210

    	As a service to others who may one day find themselves in this
    	situation, I'll answer my own question with the answer that
    	came off the Usenet.

    	MS-DOS, apparently, won't work - one MUST have PC-DOS

    	Being a newcomer to DOS, I did not know that there was a difference,
    	a kind soul from the Usenet pointed this fact out to me.

940.2You need PC-DOS to boot from HD.BAGELS::FELDMANJerry Feldman DTN 227-3279Thu Aug 23 1990 19:278
    Re: .0
    You must run PC-DOS to be able to boot DOS from your hard disk. However,
    if you boot DOS from a floppy, you may certainly use your C: and D:
    partitions, and share them with your ST data. Also, a PC may only boot
    from the C: partition. Since you have to execute PC-DITTO (ostensably from
     the hard disk), booting DOS from a diskette isn't too bad, as long as
    the DOS utilities are on the HD.

940.3DOS usage?SKIVT::HEARNTime will tell...Mon Aug 27 1990 14:384

    Understood, now, but not at the time. What is PC-DOS used for vs
    MS_DOS?

    The differences between PC-DOS and MS-DOS are minor, but subtle. Both
    are essentially the same "operating system". PC-DOS is the version that
    comes with real IBM PCs. MS-DOS is the more generic version which is
    sold by Microsoft. Both have identical interfaces. The subtlety lies in
    the interface between the OS and the BIOS. For some reason, the way
    Bill Teal engineered PC-DITTO, he was able to get PC-DOS to boot
    directly from hard disk, but not MS-DOS. Also, note that some clones
    have there own slightly customized versions of MS-DOS.

    Jerry,

    	Thanks for the explanations... Oh well, guess I'll just have to
    	use it without the 'boot' capability. I don't mind that so
    	much, now, knowing that I was doing doing things right :^)
    	even tho' with the wrong OS :^( Chalk it up to 'live and
    	learn' on my part.

    							Tnx agn,
