| There are a lot of things that can go wrong here, both hardware and
software. I remember trying to solve this weird problem where Chris's
printer would work on his computer in my house, but not his computer in
his house. At first we suspected power, but then realised that we
booted the systems differently. I finally convinced myself the problem
was software, and Chris figured out that it is was something that ran at
boot time, and changing the power sequencing to turn the computer on
first, let it boot, and then turn on the printer, made the problem go away.
Try two different computers in the SAME PLACE with EXACTLY the same boot
disk, etc. If one works and the other doesn't, its hardware. In this
case, if you think you blew the printer port, replacing the sound chip,
which is a cheap part found (here anyway) in any Radio Shack store,
would be the first step. The printer port is attached to a spare port
on the sound chip.
Of course, it still might be software. What type of printer is it?
