912.0. "Alchimie Jr. shareware MIDI sequencer" by JRDV06::HANADA (Takeshi Hanada, Storage System Development/JRD/Tokyo) Wed Jun 27 1990 03:39

    Hi,

    Does someone know about or actually use shareware ($25) MIDI
    sequencer "Alchemie Jr." developed by a fellow in Swiss?

    Yeah,

    I've got it & play with it a bit. It's the best looking PD sequencer,
    but not being anything but a step mode entry man, I can't really tell
    how good the real time recording is.

    It uses GEM in real time, i.e. you can scroll, open close windows while
    playing a piece of music without interuption.

    As I said above, keyboard (real time) and mouse (step mode) entry
    are allowed. It allows 256 tracks per pattern & multiple patterns
    per song & can store multiple songs in memeory.

    1MB is recommended but I can just about mess with a few things with
    my 520, but I can't do much for real.

    One major plus it that it both reads and writes Standard Midi Files
    (type 0 and 1).

    Anything else you want to know ?

    Due to overwelming demand,

    The LHARCed file ALCHIMIE.LZH can be found on KAON::

    Some ascii documentation extracted from alchimie.lzh, ALCHIMIE.DOC can
    also be found on KAON::

    For those of you who don't have lharc.prg, the file LHARC051.TOS
    (also on KAON::) may help you. This is a 'self decompressing' file
    and when run will create many files, one of which is lharc.prg. However
    I have never uploaded a TOS file onto VMS using kermit before, so
    I can't guarentee it will work.

    I hope it all works, I'm not to good with kermit, so yell if there's
    any problems.

    Thanks Stuart for putting Alchimie up on the net.

    Could you tell us which directory?

    It would appear that my 'uploading' skills need more work I'm afraid.
    Knowing my luck I probably set file type binary at only one end.
    Therefore the .TOS file doesn't work and nor does the .LZH file.

    The .DOC file is readable (e.g. via TPU), but when typed appears
    to have no line feeds in it.

    I will try again, however I am informed (via the COMMUSIC notes
    file) that another person has uploaded their file to :-

    NIBLIK::FSUSER$DISK:[ROBSON.HOBBY.ST]ALCHIMIE.LZH;2

    so I hope that will work.

    Does anybody have a version of LHARC on the VAX that they know works ?

    Sorry for the inconvenience.

    				Stuart P.
912.11Try again (at your own risk)HAMPS::POOREStuart Poore, IM, STG, @BST, U.K.Wed Jul 11 1990 09:1617
    I have tried again :-

    Try KAON::LHARC051.TOS	(new version)
        KAON::ALCIMIE.LZH	(new version)
    	KAON::ALCIMIE.DOC	(same version)

    Please note, no guarentees ! If you sepnd a fortune on the phone bill &
    it doesn't work, please don't blaim me (I've spent a small fortune
    uploading them thank you !).

    For this reason I would be gratefull if people could respond with
    wiether it has worked or not with these files or the file on NIBLIK. I
    could then copy the working versions to the MIDI library on
    MIDI::MIDI$DUA1:[MIDILIB...] (as discussed in the COMMUSIC notes file)

    Many Thanks,
    		Stuart P.
912.12This works, can't wait to get home and try it.PRNSYS::LOMICKAJJeffrey A. LomickaWed Jul 11 1990 16:313
This latest upload of LHARC and ALCHIMIE to KAON dowloads and de-LZH's
just fine using WHACK/STRANSF. Note the "H" in ALCHIMIE, omitted from .11.

912.13Yeah, it works!JRDV06::HANADATakeshi Hanada, Storage System Development/JRD/TokyoThu Jul 12 1990 06:2921
Thanks a lot, Stuart.

I have downloaded KAON::ALCHIMIE.LZH and defrosted it on PC (just for my
convenience) then ran it on my Atari. It started up fine! After instantly
played two DEMOs in the .lZH file, I have tried and succeeded to import a MIDI
file which was exported from Steinberg PRO24III. The song was eight tracked
fusion style music w/ about 10,000 notes. It replayed my music perfectly!

One thing I noticed at that time was that Alchimie seemed not able to live with
ETERNAL2, which is a reset proof RAM disk program. Before I removed it, when I
imported said MIDI file w/ 10,000 notes, the screen display was corrupted and
it lost control. It reproduced when I retired. It seemed that RAM allocation
was duplicated between Alchimie and ETERNAL2 or something like that. One
another non-reproduceable trouble was a sudden hang-up when I click system info
icon to see available memory size. Another program I install at system boot is
mouse doubler. I have not yet tested to identify mouse doubler is the cause or
not.

I'll be back here with more comments some time next week.

912.15High-resolution onlyGUESS::ENGHOLMLarry EngholmThu Jul 04 1991 04:202
    This apparently only works in monochrome. Bummer (for those of us with
    only color monitors).
912.16It *does* work in Medium ResolutionRUTILE::BISHOPThu Jul 04 1991 11:328
Hi Larry,

I've managed to get Alchemie to work in Medium Resolution. Have you tried it?

Regards,

					Lewis.
912.17It (at least partially) works!GUESS::ENGHOLMLarry EngholmFri Jul 05 1991 05:1720
    Lewis,

    This is great news.

    When I first tried to run it, I got some error message and it exited.
    Then I noticed that the title page of alchimie.doc says
    		For ATARI ST,STE, Monochrome only.
    and I gave up. Now I see that I couldn't run it before because my RAM
    disk was taking up too much room.

    So, now I can run it and get the screen, but I can't get it to do
    anything. The documentation says there should be a "control panel" at
    the bottom left of the screen. Since I don't see it, I assume it's
    down below the bottom of the screen, since I'm just using medium
    resolution.

    Oh, I see, it's possible to change the position of the control panel
    by editting the .inf file! And you can play the song by just hitting
    0!  Thanks a bunch.

912.18Great news... RUTILE::BISHOPFri Jul 05 1991 05:4025
	Larry,

	I'm glad you managed to get it to work. I actually made a mistake
	by saying it "RUNS", what i meant to say was that it "BOOTS".

	I borrowed a friends ROLAND "E5" synth last night and hooked it up
	to the Atari. I only tried using Alchemie last night, and discovered
	the same as you! The Control Panel was in the bottom left, then i
	noticed the ominous fateful sign "Monochrome Only", so i'm afraid i
	was wrong.

	But that's great news about finding a fix around! I'm going to have
	a go tonight and try.

	But i did try out MIDI_SEQ last night, and it's quite nice, Anyone
	else have any opinions on this, or does it come nowhere close to
	Alchemie standards?

	As you can all probably tell, i'm no musician, but i just thought it
	would be nice to have a try at this stuff and it looks like it's
	gonna be fun!

	Regards,

					Lewis.

Re -1

Thanks for the pointer, i'll put it over and try again but i'm sure that i've
tried that mono emulator and it crashes with 4 bombs.

Larry,

Which parts did you modify in the ALCHEMIE.INF to get the control panel at the
top?

Cheers,

					Lewis.

    The line starting with IB gives the position of the control panel. To
    get it at the top left, I changed the line to:

    IB 1 1

    I also moved some of the other icons (disk, ID; and trash, IT) up by
    changing the second number in those lines to 1.

Hi,

	has anybody tried to 'double-click' on ALCHIMIE-objects?

	The documentation says:

   Dclick : Point something and click brievly two times on the left
   button.
	    :
	    :
	    :
   If you double-click on the PLAY button Alchimie Jr shows you the
   current sequencing mode in a dialog box. Modes are :
	    :
	    :
	    :
   If you double-click on the Input Buffer bar, you will see a dialog
   box displaying his contents and the current record mode.
	    :
	    :
	    :
   Double-click on an empty line of the song window, fill the dialog box
   and confirm.
	    :
	    :
	    :
   Double-click on the song you want to modify.
	    :
	    :
	    :
   Double-click on a pattern and fill the dialog box.
	    :
	    :
	    :
   Double-click and change in the dialog box.
	    :
	    :
	    :
   An other way to modify those parameters is to double-click on a track
   and modify them in the info dialog box.
	    :
	    :
	    :
   Double-click on the left side of the note. To change a parameter
   value input it or select the title of the param you want to modify
   and use the arrows to increment/decrement the value.
	    :
	    :
	    :

   Note : You also may edit an event by double-clicking on the event you
   want in the window.
	    :
	    :
	    :
   Double-click on the event you want to change, modify the parameters
   in the dialog box and confirm.
	    :
	    :
	    :
   To display the data filter dialog box, select the title Filter in the
   menu Config or double-click on the FILTER icon.

	But it doesn't work with my installation. My other software accepts
	my double-clicks, why not ALCHIMIE?

regards
Bert.
