843.0. "Atari equivalent for Mac IIcx" by NETMAN::HOLZWASSER () Mon Apr 23 1990 18:17

I would like to purchase the Atari equivalent of the
Macintosh IIcx - basically, a 16 MHz 68030 based machine
with expandable main RAM to a minimum of 4 Mbytes, support
of a hard disk drive (80Mb+), and 1.4Mb floppies. Of course,
    	high resolution color monitor.

Is there anything in the Atari product line that comes close
to these requirements? The point of the question, of course,
is the assumption that Atari products will cost less than their
    	Macintosh equivalents.

Oh - one other item: the IIcx has exansion slots. Does the
equivalent Atari have them as well?

    	Thanks.

Call Jim Allen of Fast Technology in Burlington, MA, and find out the
story on the 68030 upgrade to the Mega-4. (He will be at next months
BCS/Atari meeting with information about this future product.)

No, there is nothing in the currently available line that comes close to
meeting your requirements.

On the other hand, what you want is very similar to what Atari is planning
on introducing as the "TT". The initial TT offering will have few, if any,
expansion slots, although later models will have many.

The big problem is one of availability. Atari announced the TT last August,
and promised delivery in the first quarter of this year. That slipped, and
developeres were supposed to get their machines in March. That slipped too,
and now the date is May, or June, or later.

So, if you have to have a machine now, go with the Mac. If your need is not
immediate, you might want to wait for several months for the TT. Oh, no
official pricing for the TT has been announced, except for a German user
saying a TT would cost 6500 DM (about $4000?) - that's with disk and monitor,
and a few meg of memory.
843.3ST 68030 PROTOTYPEELMAGO::ESANCHEZTue Apr 24 1990 20:1617
I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO SCHEDULE MY VACATION IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA
OVER THE APRIL 8 AND 9 WEEKEND AND WAS ABLE TO ATTEND THE ATARI
WORLD CONFERENCE HELD AT THE DISNEYLAND HOTEL.

DAVID SMALL FROM GADGETS BY SMALL HAD A PROTOTYPE ST RUNNING WITH
A 68030 PROCESSOR. HE HAS A NUMBER OF DEMOS AND EVERYTHING RAN
ABOUT 2 1/2 TIMES FASTER. HE IS DRIVING THE 68030 AT 16MHG.

DAVID SMALL HAS A COLUMN IN, I BELIEVE "ST WORLD" PUT OUT BY MICHTRON
    AND TALKED ABOUT HIS PROTOTYPE.

I BELIEVE HE WILL MARKET THE 68030 UPGRADE IF IT TURNS OUT TO BE
    WORTH WHILE.

HOPE THIS HELPS. IF OTHER ARE INTERESTED I WILL SUMMARIZE THE ARTICLE.

As long as you are considering alternatives to a Mac... Commodore today
officially announced the Amiga 3000 and a bunch of other things,

    So would I!

Was there any mention of prices/availability, or even plans for
release? Also, what are the technical implications of upgrading an
original 1040ST to this new board? Would it be a simple board
replacement, or would a new power supply eventually be needed to
support a configuration that had the 68030 outfitted with the maximum
    memory?

And what would the implications be for software compatability? Would
all the current programs designed for the 68000 be readily run on the
68030, or would there be an interim list of programs known to work/not
work? Finally, besides the obvious advantage of speed, would there be
advantages of having a 68030 on-board that future software programs
could use (eg, better graphics display handling/more colors in the
    displayable palette/faster interaction with peripherals/???)

Thanks for any information you can provide. Also, when you summarize
the article, could you include complete contact information for
this person David Small. Thanks again

     RE: a few

Dave Small was the person who created the famous macintosh emulators
magic sac, and spectre 128/gcr for the ST's. He is having Jim Allen
of fast technologies (maker of Turbo 16 for the ST) do the hardware, and
dave is going to do the software. Originally the only machine they
planned on supporting the upgrade on is the Mega series because of it's
expansion slot. I have heard mumblings about other versions, but nothing
official from them. They are also not guaranteeing they are going to
realase it as a product the reason they gave to make it, was dave wanted
to do faster mac emulation, like when he builds new versions of his
mac emulator software. If you desire to get in contact with him, he
can be reached by e-mail. I am sure his address is in this notes file
somewhere, but it is something like ...!well!dsmall. I think decwrl
talks directly to node well, so you can send mail to:
decwrl::"well!dsmall" He can also probably be reached on genie, he is
usually pretty good about answering mail. Wait a minute, I got some
mail from him once. ... You should be able to reach him at:
decwrl::"well!dsmall@apple.com". You might want to use node decpa
instead of decwrl, as decwrl has been unstable recently.
