816.0. "VAX > ST file transfer (again)" by CHEFS::MURPHYJ1 () Mon Apr 02 1990 15:28

    Greetings,

Being fortunate (!) to have both an ST and a MicroVAX 2000 at home
can someone enlighten me hom to acheive file transfer between the
two over a serial line? I have tried using Kermit and Xmodem to
    no avail.

I suspect its something to do with the terminal line characteristics -
I have tried setting PASALL and played around with eightbit etc
    but without any luck.

The ST is connected into the back of the MicroVAX via a DEC-423
lead, I can run terminal sessions without any problems but just
    cannot transfer anything.

    Any ideas?

    Jon.

Are you running VMS or Ultrix?

Kermit *should* work, using Uniterm at the ST end and VMS Kermit at the
VMS end. If you can log in, you should be able to transfer files. What
are your error symptoms? If you can transfer ascii but not binary, read
PRNSYS::DUA2:[LOMICAKJ.HOBBY.ST]XFERINTRO.TXT to find out what went wrong.

If VMS, get SSU installed and use the combination of STRANSF/Whack.
This should give you about 400char/sec file transfer rate at 9600 baud,
limited by Whack's serial line throughput. Whack is optimized for 2400
baud, and by default you will only get about 300 bytes/sec. You will
have to change some of the timing parameters. If you get it working at
all, I can give you timing numbers to improve the throughput.

If using Ultrix, your best bet is the KA9Q TCP/IP package. See the last
topic in the KA9Q topic for the direction to go for getting this working.

And if you are running Ultrix use X/YMODEM for the highest throughput.
