is it possible to install a battery to keep the time when the 520ST
    is powered off?

I don't know about modifying a 520ST, however, there are a few vendors
of add-on boards with lithium battery backup for the clock chips.
Software loads the "board time" into the atari at boot time.

You may buffer the clock in your keyboard processor with some
rechargable batteries and a small circuit to recharge them when
power is on. On every power-up the keyboard clock time then must
be loaded to the system via a little program in the auto-folder.
This is the cheapest solution, but accuracy isn't that good (good
for about 3 weeks, then you have to reset the time).

There's also "Z-TIME" (about $40, U.S.) and the ICD host adaptor for the
hard disk includes a non-volitale clock.

Has anyone got a set of atari prints they could let
me have a copy of?

I connected the battery backup as in this
article. (schematic kindly supplied by Bernd)

The problem I have is that the battery only keeps the time
for a day even on fully charged batteries.

I would like to do a little troubleshooting before
I give up on it and spend some money on a plug in
clock.

    Bernd,

It's an STE but I guess most, including the keyboard, will be the same
    as the ST FM.
